Aug 28th 9-11:50 SCA ST 3</p><p>Cinematography workshop 9a-12p: Camera/lighting workshop, “Night interior” Philosophy of course, assignments, Facilities, safety, workshop TA: Copies of syllabus, 2EX cameras, tripod, monitor etc. from EC. Overhead projector LEE NUMERIC SWATCH BOOKS, </p><p>Students: Assignment: #1 Production design/style photos: 10 examples that convey the look and feel of your film (cinematographer and director gather 10 photos each)</p><p>Assignment #2 Observe light as it appears naturally and how it changes during a period of time that is relevant to your script. Set Diopter: - Adjust the slider under the viewfinder, so that the viewfinder is focused to your eye</p><p>2. Set LCD: - Go to the LCD/EVF SET menu - LCD - set color/contrast/brightness Turn on color-bars and set PLUGE level. (PLUGE stands for Picture Line-Up Generation Equipment. A "pluge pattern" is a test pattern used to calibrate the black level on a video monitor. Black level basically refers to the brightness of the darkest areas in the picture (black is never completely black, it's just a very dark gray) Cinematography instructor will instruct students on proper LCD Calibration</p><p>3. Set electronic viewfinder - Go to the LCD/EVF SET menu - EVF - set color/contrast/brightness Turn on color-bars and set PLUGE. Cinematography instructor will instruct students on proper EVF Calibration.</p><p>4. Zebras: -Press the ZEBRA button on the the left-hand side panel to turn on or off -Go to the LCD/VF SET menu - zebra - select Zebra levels Zebra 1 is 70% and Zebra 2 is 100%. Cinematography instructor will review the use of Zebras for exposure control.</p><p>5. Setting format: - Press MENU button to set the camcorder to Menu mode, display the OTHERS menu, and set “Video format” to HQ 1920x1080 23.98 Progressive. (All projects for 508 will be shot in this format)</p><p>6. Picture Profile Settings: -Picture profiles can be used to save looks created in camera. Cinematography instructor will instruct 508 students on Picture profile looks. -Press Picture profile button -Profile names (6 profiles available) customize names as desired i.e. day exterior, night -Matrix: Setting: ON / select: Cinema / all other settings should be left at 0 -Color correction: OFF -White: Offset White: OFF, Preset White: (this is where you can set your preset buttons on camera to 3200K or 5600K ). Students may use this menu to adjust white balance in steps of 100K to fine tune color balance in mixed color temperature situations. -Gamma: Select: CINE 2 (leave Gamma on CINE 2 as per post production specified “Safe levels”) -Black: 0 -Black Gamma: 0 -Low Key SAT: 0 Note: Students will be given a complete camera setup manual to setup camera to USC specs.</p><p>There is a textbook that is mandatory for this class: Title: Voice and Vision, A creative approach to narrative film and dv production Author: Mick Hurbis-Cherrier Focal press ISBN 13: 978-0-240-80773-7 ISBN 10: 0-240-80773-1</p><p>Necessities for class and set:</p><p>Screw driver for tripod Leather Gloves</p><p>Pouch containing: Slate Mag light White grease pencil Swiss army knife or multi tool Small scissors (for gels) Lens cleaner Lens tissue Circuit tester (radio shack across street)</p><p>Expendables: Mole Richardson, Studio Depot expendable store. 9000 N. La Brea 323.851.0111 you get a student discount.</p><p>GRADING: In-Class participation 30% Assignments 20% Attendance 10% HD project (cinematographer) 40%</p><p>You must discuss all absences from class with me. This is a workshop. If you miss three classes you drop a full letter in your final grade, i.e., a B to a C. One unexcused absence will result in a drop of your final grade by one notch of a grade, i.e., a B+ to a B. Two unexcused absences will result in a drop of two notches of a grade, i.e., a B+ to a B-.</p><p>Two unexcused lateness’ will be counted as an absence.</p><p>SAFETY The personal safety of yourselves, your cast and crew members is a vital consideration as you plan and shoot your projects. Please check with your instructors before shooting if you have any questions or concerns. Read the safety handout and understand the contents. Footage shot under unsafe conditions will be withheld from the project; students privileges may be suspended: and grades lowered. Be sure to discuss all hazardous shooting conditions listed on the HSC handout with your instructors.</p><p>STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: Any student requesting academic accommodations based on a disability is requited to register with Disability Services and Programs (DSP) each semester. A letter of verification for approved accommodations can be obtained from DSP. Please be sure that the letter is delivered to the Professor as early in the semester as possible.
