<p>HMSA Advisory Board meeting Feb. 25, 2012</p><p>The meeting was called to order by Principal Cathy Worley at 5:30 p.m.</p><p>In Attendance: Catherine Worley, Principal MHS Katina Dudley, Director HMSA Lauren Williamson, Biology Teacher MHS Beverley McCaskill, Latin Teacher MHS Alison Neil, Career & College Counselor MHS Adam Southall, Counselor liaison for HMSA Eric Strucko, Albemarle County Public Schools(ACPS) School Board Member Ned Galloway, ACPS School Board Member Matt Haas, ACPS Assistant Superintendent John Donnelly, VP for Instruction & Student Services, PVCC Jeff Prillaman, Director MESA Alison Selden, Principal Yancey Elementary Mike Irani, Assistant Principal Cale Elementary Tom Wolanski, Family Practitioner Sue Woodson, Certified Nurse Midwife, R.N. Health Occupations Students of America Nikki Hastings, VP for laboratory operations at HemoShear biotech firm; VABIO Dick Lindsay, retired physician currently working with minority med students</p><p>Welcome Dr. Catherine Worley, Principal, Monticello High School</p><p>Introductions: HMSA Director HMSA School-based Committee Advisory board Members</p><p>HMSA Director’s report: Mission statement of the HMSA: The Monticello High School Health and Medical Sciences Academy’s mission is to empower students for success, utilizing 21st century skills, while exploring health science career opportunities. The program will provide students a foundation for post-secondary education or workforce readiness in certified health related professions. Students will explore core content with technology through integrated projects, case studies, and focused learning experiences.</p><p>History of project: Pam Moran arranged a tour of the med school at UVA; witnessed engaged students; learned that Healthcare largest industry and one of fastest growing ones; PSAT data confirmed nearly 25% of MHS students interested in health-related field.</p><p>4 year plan for HMSA students: Year One: Exposure to Pre-Health fields via an enhanced, integrated Honors Biology & Health & Medical Science core course. This course will include integrated case studies, field trips, guest speakers . . . Students will also secure CPR and First Aid Certifications Year Two: Exploration via an introductory course in Anatomy & Physiology to prepare students for the rigors of collegiate A&P course Years Three & Four: Preparation & Practice via clinical rotations followed by senior internships. Also research culminating in a senior project. Students will have the opportunity to complete the General Education course requirements for all of PVCC 2-year and certificate programs. These courses will also prepare students for admittance to most institutions for preparation for health-related careers. Elective courses in medical terminology, Microbiology, Forensics, and Anatomical Architecture are being negotiated.</p><p>Three Pathways: Pathway 1: Allied Health (to include a variety of industry certification programs) Pathway 2: Technical, Bio-Engineering, Medical Equipment Pathway 3: Medical Doctor, D.D.S, RN, LPN A student’s studies may culminate in career and technical centers, community college or a four – year program based on their choice of pathway and success in the Academy. See charts for course progressions through high school for Pathways 2 and 3. (Academy during year one will support Pathway 2 and Pathway 3).</p><p>Timeline: 2012-13 is the inaugural year for the Academy. Applications for this academic year will be for up to 50 rising 9th grade students. By 2015, the Academy will expand to provide opportunities for all grade levels.</p><p>Budget Requests: .5 FTE funded for the Director Position Stipends for curriculum writing One-to-one techonology Lab equipment</p><p>Funding: Governor’s initiative has potential funding resources $5000 grant secured</p><p>Questions and Feedback from Board: How might the HMSA coordinate with program(s) at CATEC? Have had conversations with Adam Hastings How will other HSMA courses work? Working on curriculum now and in summer, charts are available and are currently being produced for various pathways; course curriculum is currently being developed or negotiated. If you would like to view one or more of these charts, please let Katina Dudley know. Is dedicated space available? Assessing our space now; potentially down the road plans to add on.</p><p>Brainstorming as to how board members might be able to support HSMA:  Access to competitions, state leadership conferences through HOSA  Raise awareness about Biotechnology companies, provide internships  Help with identifying and facilitating internships  Procurement of equipment  Help with outreach at elementary level to begin awareness of health-related careers  Facilitation of a student run clinic as service outreach program (blood pressure monitoring, dietary screening)  Explore public health options beyond the clinical ones discussed  Help access UVa graduate students as resources  Access the aging field of healthcare by establishing one-on-one relationships  Get 16 year olds and older qualifications to ride and assist on EMT runs  Explore HIPA certification or approvals for students Closing Items: Katina assign to the advisory board three questions: 1. How can the Advisory Board partner to implement clinical and internship opportunities? 2. How can we best prepare our students to meet the needs of the HMS industry? Skill sets? 3. How can the board members and community members support the academy?</p><p>Press Release: Permission to release information that identifies participation on the advisory board was requested. </p><p>Next Meeting: Tuesday, March 27 next meeting at 5:30 Meetings will be held monthly; fourth Tuesday of every month.</p><p>Meeting Adjourned at 6:45 p.m.</p>
