Distributed Stereoscopic Image Viewing for the Web

Distributed Stereoscopic Image Viewing for the Web

Distributed Stereoscopic Gaming for the Web

IDS/ISEB

Description

The project aim is to produce a simple real time distributed game that can be played by one or more players across the network, possibly against each other. The game must be designed to use the stereoscopic 3D depth as a key part of the game-play.

Standard 2D and Stereoscopic 3D versions of the game will be created and player’s high scores against will be tested in 2D and 3D modes. In advanced deliverables simulated network delays and traffic loss could be introduced and the relative change in player performance in 2D and 3D quantified.

Auto-stereoscopic displays bring 3D capabilities to desktop displays and are becoming widely available; they allow a “no-glasses” 3D experience. There remain many unresolved technical issues regarding how to best use 3D displays and this project provides an opportunity to investigate these issues.

Research Area Distributed stereoscopic graphics and interaction.

Preliminary Preparation Background reading on auto-stereoscopic displays and 3D image generation. Research to investigate existing stereoscopic games and game-play ideas. Analyse software available on our 3D displays: DTI, SeeReal, Synthagram, RD3D. Initial system design and image format.

Minimum Deliverables Design and choice of graphics standard, eg PNG, Java2D, SVG, Java3D etc. Distributed game working for both 2D and stereoscopic 3D displays.

Intermediate Deliverable Evaluation of the game working in stereoscopic 2D and stereoscopic 3D.

Advanced Deliverables There are various routes this project could take for the advanced deliverable; Effect of network latency and packet loss on 2D and stereoscopic 3D performance. Support for animation.

Hardware/Software The project will require use of the 2D/3D display equipment in CS2.19 and could also require use of web server and database technology depending on your design decisions.

References Lenny Lipton’s guides at www.stereographics.com Online books at www.stereoscopic.org Sharp RD3D product information www.sharp3d.com My web pages and previous projects www.dur.ac.uk/n.s.holliman
