Project Sketches

2012 Grant Application- New Gardens Kids Garden Fresh Program- Garden Sketch Project Sketches

When creating your garden sketch, keep in mind you are planning for the future. The drawing will probably be modified over time, but for now, your goal is to create a picture of what it will look like when all elements are added, over years of expansion.

The attached sketches are intended to provide some ideas for your design. Included are drawings of vegetable gardens, a pocket park, an outdoor classroom, and an expanded herb garden. The plant selections on these drawings are just examples. Use them as a guide, but create a project unique to your neighborhood, organization, or school.

To Get Started:

When you have decided on the project type and location, measure the size of the area you will be planting. Include the dimensions of the lot in your sketch and the orientation of the lot (label which direction is north). Draw in all existing trees, sidewalks, buildings, etc. This is the sketch of the garden, as it currently exists.

Next, draw the larger components of your project; include planting beds, berms, sitting areas, perennial borders, hardscape accents, etc. Do you want to plant trees now for a shaded area in the future? Include the dimensions of these areas. Now, fill in the details. Indicate plant varieties, how many, and their locations. This is your final project drawing.

Important things to remember:

 Insist on every gardener’s input. If your fellow gardeners have an area special to them, they will be more likely to nurture the overall space. Do not forget students!  Trees and shrubs will grow; give them room. (Take notice of your power lines.)  Mulched areas will need to be re-mulched once per year and weeded in summer.  The sun moves throughout the growing season. An area that gets sun now may not in mid-summer.  Where is your water source? How far will you have to carry a hose to water?  This is a long-term plan/design. Vegetable beds, perennials, trees, shrubs, arbors, tool sheds, signs, etc. will be added each year (not all at once.)  Consider the number of people in your group, their physical capabilities, and time commitments.

Please do not be intimidated by this process.

Sketches need not be artistic or professional,

simply clear and accurate.

Feel free to include sketches from your students
