In order for a sentence to be truly a sentence or complete, it must have three things:</p><p>1. ______2. ______3. ______</p><p>EXAMPLE: My sister plays the violin every day after school.</p><p>PRACTICE #1: Read the following sentences and identify these parts. </p><p>1. Antarctica has the highest elevation of the seven continents.</p><p>2. People on Antarctica study many things.</p><p>3. One type of bird found on Antarctica is the penguin.</p><p>4. The continent is far away from pollution.</p><p>5. Even though Antarctica is covered in ice and snow, it can be considered a desert.</p><p>A fragment is an incomplete sentence. It is incomplete because it is missing one of the three parts of a sentence, either a subject, verb, or complete thought.</p><p>EXAMPLE: ______Spends time together walking through the garden. ______Before she went home. ______The people swimming in the pool on Saturday.</p><p>PRACTICE #2: The following are all fragments. Identify if the fragment is a fragment because it is missing a subject (S), verb (V), or complete thought (CT)</p><p>1. ______No native people on Antarctica.</p><p>2. ______Because it is too cold.</p><p>3. ______Although scientists and other workers live in Antarctica for about a year at a time.</p><p>4. ______Examine the ozone layer, sleep patterns, and fish survival in subzero temperatures.</p><p>5. ______Ninety-five percent of Antarctica covered with ice.</p><p>6. ______Antarctica approximately 70 percent of the world’s fresh water in its ice. 7. ______A desert an area that gets very little precipitation.</p><p>8. ______Also has very high winds. 9. ______Many animals in the ocean around Antarctica. 10. ______Huge whales and seals in the ocean. 11. ______A mountain range across the continent. 12. ______If you were to travel to this continent.</p><p>Now that you have practiced what is needed for a sentence to be complete, let’s practice identifying sentences vs. fragments.</p><p>PRACTICE #3: Identify the following as either a sentence (S) or a fragment (F) </p><p>1. ______If your parents think today’s fashions are weird. 2. ______They should see the clothes people wore in the Middle Ages. 3. ______Patterns of floral or geometric shapes popular. 4. ______Liked clothes that were half one color and half another. 5. ______Might have one green leg and one red leg. 6. ______People often heavy leather belts decorated with metal and jewels. 7. ______Edges of clothing into shapes called dagges. 8. ______Sleeves with streamers that were two or three feet long. 9. ______Shoes had long toes that were padded to retain their shape. 10. ______Tights of velvet or silk. 11. ______When clothes were edged and lined in fur. 12. ______Layers very common in medieval clothing. 13. ______Was a way of displaying wealth. 14. ______The more clothes a person could afford to wear, the wealthier that person was. 15. ______Might wear a short-sleeved tunic over a long-sleeved tunic, with a sleeveless mantle over all. 16. ______The usual head covering for men a hood with an attached shoulder cape and a long, extended point, like a tail. 17. ______Women wore a neck cloth pinned to their braids, hiding their hair. 18. ______On top of the head, would wear a veil, a linen crown, or a small, round hat. 19. ______In the later Middle Ages, women wore jeweled metal nets over their coiled braids. 20. ______Current fashions a little boring in comparison.</p>
