Rowling’s</p><p>7 th Grade Summer Reading Assignments: Choice 1 Mr. Silva</p><p>Please read the following book: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and complete all the assignments listed below. Remember to bring all work with you on your first day of school. Have fun with your reading, and enjoy your summer.</p><p>Tasks:</p><p>1. Pre-Reading Activities: Now most of you might have already read all 5 books in the series, and or have seen all three movies. If you have than great and you can skip this task unless you want to refresh your memories. For those who haven’t, you must rent all the 1st three films in the series and watch them before reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, in order to familiarize yourself with the story, characters, and setting. This is essential in reading the 4th novel, because otherwise you will be lost. Have fun. (Suggestion: to save money and have fun, invite some friends over with your parents supervision of course, and watch them together. Feel free to invite your parents to watch them with you.)</p><p>2. Guided Reading: While reading the novel, complete the guided reading quiz. Make sure to answer all of the questions provided.</p><p>3. Vocabulary: Attached in your packet is a list of vocabulary words used in the novel Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Using context clues and a dictionary (of course) correctly define each vocabulary word. Now here is the hard part, locate each word in the novel and write down the sentence and page number in which the word was used. Example: “Harry saw a poltergeist” pg. # 4. Themes: To most readers, the Harry Potter series is just about fun, fantasy and magic, but the plot and story lies deeper than that. If you read between the lines, you will notice that especially in the 4th book, you see evidence of racism occurring in the wizarding world. Some of the characters and story lines in the 4th novel can be compared to historical moments and people in history, like the Nazism, The Holocaust, and the KKK. Your job is to identify and list at least 5 specific examples of racism using quotes from the novel and explain how and why they are examples of racism.</p><p>5. Writing and Technology: Thanks to the development of technology and use of special effects, many classic and contemporary novels have been taken from the pages of books and brought to life on the big screen. YOUR JOB: You must watch the movie version of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and write a well developed 8 to 10 paragraph essay comparing and contrasting the movie to the book. Make sure to use specific examples from both the film and novel. Formatting: This could be either hand written or typed, but make sure that which ever one you chose to follow the appropriate essay writing format that is provided to you in the packet.</p><p>6. Art: Last but not least, you must create your own original book cover for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. You may use computer images and graphic programs but the design must be entirely original!
