DATE OF ADMISSION TO : 11-10-2010

THE COURSE

5. TITLE OF DISSERTATION : “THE EFFECT OF AMALAKI AS PATHYA IN AMLAPITTA (HYPERACIDITY)”

6. BRIEF RESUME OF THE STUDY

6.1 Need for the Study:

The period of 21st century is regarded as the era of fast technology and tough competition. The man of this era is becoming prey to series of life style disorder which are much more bothering than the infective diseases. The altered life style activities like fried food, night shifts, mental stress, addictions etc. are the major risk factors for Amlapitta.

Due to excess consumption of Pitta Prakopakara Ahara, Vihara leads to Amlatha, Dravata, Vriddi of Pitta causing Shuktata of Pitta and manifest the disease Amlapitta and Manasika Bhavas plays important role in it1. As it is said that medicine alone cannot bring the desired therapeutic effect without Pathya on the other hand if Pathya is observed there will be no need of medications. Amalaki is considered as Pathya in Amlapitta2. With this back ground an attempt has been made in this study by advising Amalalaki as Pathya in the subjects of Amlapitta, its effect as Pathya will be evaluated.

Amalaki is Amla Pradhana Pancha Rasa and is Pitta Shamaka. It is having Guru, Ruksa, Sheeta Guna, Sheeta Veerya, Madhura Vipaka, Tridosha Shamaka. It has Karmas like Vaya Sthapana, Rasayana, Chakshusya and Vrishya3. So Amalaki Churna may be expected to have beneficial impact in clinical conditions of Amlapitta as Pathya.

Hence this study proposes to evaluate the effect of Amalaki Churna as Pathya in Amlapitta.

6.2 Review of Literature

Among the ancient texts Kashyapa Samhitha is the first text, which has mentioned Amlapitta as separate disease. He mentioned the involvement of Tridosha with the dominance of Pitta. It also gives suggestion to change the place of living to have peace of mind to cure disease. Thus suggesting Manasika Bhavas have a great impact on Amlapitta Vyadhi1.

Bhaishajya Rathnavali mention Amalaki as Pathya in Amlapitta2. Madhava Nidana explained Nidana as Virudda Bojana, Dushta, Amla, Vidhahi Bhojana and other Pitta Prakopakara Ahara Vihara. The person suffering from Amlapitta will be having symptoms like Avipaka, Aruchi, Tiktha or Amlaudgaara, Hrith Kanta Daaha, Shiroruja, Chardi, Udara Gowrava4.

Amlapitta is one among the Abhyanthara Marga Vyadhi, its detailed explanation is not found in any of Brihatrayis. Charaka while explaining Chikithsa of Grahani has just mentioned the word Amlapitta in the context of Ajeerna5

Amalaki as mentioned in Charaka Samhitha is having Ruksha, Swadu, Kashaya, Amla, Kaphapittahara. Even though it is having Amla Rasa but acts as Pitta Shamaka. So Amalaki Churna form may act as a effective remedy in Amlapitta6.

In Sushrutha Samhitha mentioned that among fruits Amalaki is the best and can be consumed before food ,in the middle and at the end of meals7.

Yogarathnakara mentioned Amalaki as pathya8.

PREVIOUS RESEARCH WORKS

(1) Das R.C.– An anatomical and physiological approach to Annavahasrotas with special reference to etiopathological study of Parinamasula and its principles of management – Jamnagar-1990.

(2) Tewari.S- The role of Pugakhanda in the management of Amlapitta and its Shula-Jamnagar- 1993.

(3) Gandhi S.P.- A Comparative study of therapeutic efficacy of SuthasekaraRas in the management of Amlapitta and Parinamashula- B H U -1991.

(4) Sharma.A- Amlapitta Roga Mein Shathavari Ghritha Va Patoladi Kvatha Ka Prayogathmaka Adhyayan-Udaipur-1990.

(5) Sudhakara- The study of effect of Dathri Yoga in Amlapitta-Hyderbad -1991.

(6) Mohanti.P- A clinical study of Amlapitta and its management by Amlapittanthaka Churna- Puri-1996.

6.3 Objective of Study (1) To evaluate the efficacy of Amalaki Churna as a Pathya in Amlapitta

7.
