Pathfinder presentation exercise

Objectives and outline

Each master trainer team will be asked to prepare a short presentation on the pathfinder that they have prepared as a pre-workshop task. Selected trainers or training teams will then be asked to present their pathfinder as if it were part of a training event within their library. Other workshop participants and the facilitator will review the presentations and make notes for later discussion. Films of all presentations will be made for later review and comment.

Step 1: preparation and planning

Work in your master trainer team as directed by the facilitator. Review your pathfinder and prepare yourself to present the contents of the pathfinder as through you were delivering the presentation as part of a training activity focused on information resources in the subject area in question. It is up to each master trainer team as to how they will make their presentation – it can either be just a verbal presentation, a presentation supported by slides, a presentation support by an online demonstration, or any mix of these. If you would like to prepare slides or documents for use in your presentation, then the computer room is available for this. Remember to use the contents of your pathfinder in your presentation if appropriate (no need to re-type everything). Your presentation should be presented as though it is for postgraduate students working in the subject area in question, so some subject knowledge should be considered and to a group of trainees who can already use basic online information resources to a reasonably high level. The presentation should be for between 5 and 10 minutes, with a strict upper limit enforced. The presentation should focus on both the pathfinder as a library resource and the actual contents of the pathfinder.

Note: All master trainers should be prepared to present their pathfinder, although in practice, only one member of some teams may be asked to make the presentation.

Step 2: presenting your pathfinder

Present your pathfinder as directed by the facilitator. Concentrate on both the content which you are presenting and how you are presenting it. Remember what makes for effective presentation skills. Stick to the strict time limit of 5-10 minutes. Relax and have fun delivering your presentation.

c/09f9a33c42c2f403e1c4361a37949396.doc Last updated: 29/04/2009 Page: 1 Ignore the fact that you are being filmed.

Step 3: reviewing and commenting on presentations

When the path finder presentations are being made, participants (trainees) should review the presentation as it is being delivered. You should concentrate on both the content of what is being presented (is it useful, interesting, etc.) and how it is being presented. The main focus during this exercise is to practice effective presentation skills. You may wish to make some notes below to use later in the exercise.

What was good about the pathfinder presentations?

What could be improved with the presentations?

How effective were the presentations?

c/09f9a33c42c2f403e1c4361a37949396.doc Last updated: 29/04/2009 Page: 2 Step 4: summary discussion

The facilitator will lead a whole group discussion to identify:

What was good about the pathfinder presentations? What could be improved with the presentations? How effective were the presentations?

General conclusions in these areas will be written up on flip charts for later reference.

c/09f9a33c42c2f403e1c4361a37949396.doc Last updated: 29/04/2009 Page: 3
