<p> DUBLIN AM ROTARY 2013 – 2014 INTERNATIONAL SERVICES 5/6/2014 UPDATE</p><p>Projects planned for this 2013-2014 Rotary year have been implemented or are being completed. We generally have been guided by the following:</p><p>1. Support projects that are significant to a club member 2. Work with someone in the foreign country who is known to our club. 3. Assure the projects meet Rotary’s Six Areas of Focus 4. Work with a Rotary club in the country, if possible. 5. Conduct pilot programs where and when appropriate. 6. Involve other Dublin AM committees and other 6690 clubs in our projects</p><p>We have used our $13K budget, the $500 district grant and the $500 contribution from the Literacy Committee to support 2013-2014 projects. We are $1423 over budget.</p><p>Here is a summary of this year’s projects and projects looking forward:</p><p>A. SIERRA LEONE - </p><p>1. LN4 – provided 250 LN4 hands along with training videos to Sylvester Gboya who will distribute the hands to pre-qualified amputees injured in the 10 year civil war. More than 450 amputees have been pre-qualified. Sylvester will use the help of nurse’s aids for fittings. The country estimates there are over 300,000 amputees as a result of the war.</p><p>2. H20 – provided 300 water backpacks to be distributed by Sylvester and his family during the arid summer. These included 61 backpacks donated by a New Jersey Rotary Club.</p><p>3. Collected linens, cooking utensils, medical appliances, clothing, books, school supplies to be sent to Sierra Leone for distribution in the city of Bo.</p><p>Met Mohammad “Sylvester” Gboya of Sierra Leone through The Vineyard’s DNA in Plain City. Sylvester came from a prominent family and became a refugee during the 10 year civil war that devastated Sierra Leone and its economy. Sylvester was separated from his wife and children for 5 years. While the country now is calm, it is very poor. Sylvester works here as a home health care provider. At his own expense he gathers and repairs furniture and medical devices to ship to Sierra Leone every 2-4 years. He has sons in country to help and is establishing an NGO. Sylvester is being honored by the Red Cross in Washington, so his trip has been pushed into the summer.</p><p>B. INDIA - Coordinated by Mohan Viddam.</p><p>1. Interventional Radiology – Mohan visited Apollo Hospital and learned the hospital was not fully implementing the IR training provided to Dr. Sridhar Baddam at NCH in 2013. He also met with Dr. Uma Karrie at CARE Hospital in Hyberadad; she was scheduled for training this spring at NCH. Debbie Sheppard and Mohan arranged with Dr. Shiels to travel to Hyberadad for the national ISVIR conference Feb 19-22, 2015 where he will be a foreign delegate speaker and also demonstrate his IR techniques to senior radiologists from major hospitals across India. Live cases will be telecasted at the conference. Apollo Hospital will provide It costs approx $7000 to bring a doctor to NCH for training. It will cost the same for Dr. Shiels to train multiple IRs in India. Mohan has developed a productive relationship with Murali Ramisetty, coordinator of the NHG MARI (Modern Architects for Rural India). Murali coordinated the successful distribution of 30 H20 backpacks and is facilitating construction of water purification plants with Safe Water Network (SWN founded by Paul Newman). Murali visited the USA to speak in Washington. He also gave a presentation after our club meeting on 4/18/14 at MVCC.</p><p>2. H20 backpacks – Early this calendar year Mohan visited the remote tribal villages around Warangal where Dublin AM Rotary backpacks were distributed by MARI. He verified the packs are being used and provided many photos. Murali indicated that many more backpacks are needed. Tony Somers of H20 attended Murali’s presentation at MVCC. Future shipping expense needs to be resolved.</p><p>3. Water purification stations – plants are set up to serve villages of 500 to 1500 families/ households. A plant costs around $10,000 to build. Each is fully computerized and self-sustaining. Funding comes from various sources including SWN, Pepsico Foundation and private donations. Mohan is fund-raising among his friends here and in India and will approach local Rotary clubs for joint support.</p><p>C. TURKEY – Coordinated by Sinan Yankin and Claudia Trusty (literacy Committee)</p><p>1. Provided $2000 to provide 7 modular libraries to schools in remote villages of Turkey for the second year. DAM works through the Rotary Club of Istanbul–Sisk where Yankin’s father is a long-standing member; the club has provided these libraries for multiple years. On 11/18/13 Sinan gave a photo presentation to the club showing the deployed libraries and children in the rural schools. The $2000 includes a $500 District Grant and $500 from DAM’s Literacy Committee.</p><p>2. Sinan has asked Istanbul-Siski what other projects are appropriate for partnering.</p><p>D. KENYA - Coordinated by Faye Herriott</p><p>1. Faye followed up with Chania of the Conservancy on the Engali, Kenya school catchment project of last year. The system is working as planned and provides employment for 2 adults.</p><p>2. The H20 backpack pilot in Engali determined that further distribution was not viable, despite more than 20,000 being distributed in Nairobi, Kenya by Partners for Care.</p><p>3. Faye has asked Chania to identify other possible projects that the Conservancy could oversee.</p><p>E. DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – Coordinated by Jim Burness</p><p>1. The DR clubs want a second LN4 mission. Jim is coordinating with Harvey Hook for his Mission Emanuel trip schedule.</p><p>2. H20 backpacks will be part of any future mission in the Dominican Republic.</p><p>F. HAITI - Coordinated by Scott Williamson.</p><p>1. 20 backpacks and a shipping container were given to Rev. Scott Huber of Dublin Baptist Church to run a pilot through the church’s Haitian missions in December, 2013. Rev Huber indicted many more packs could be used in conjunction with the church’s hydroponics water purification sites.</p><p>2. Rev Huber and his contact in Haiti have identified where the 30 original hands have been deployed to amputees. Some recipients have outgrown the prosthesis.</p><p>3. Cholera has taken 10,000+ lives and continues. 35-45% of school age children will have no education at all in the coming 10 years, so understanding hygiene, cleanliness, disease transmission, bacteria will be non-existent. Rev Huber is obtaining 5” micron ceramic filters from China for $10 each. Dublin Lowe’s will donate 5 gallon buckers with bulkhead fitting plastic spigots. This has the potential of providing inexpensive two bucket water filters for clean water.</p><p>G. MOLDOVA - Coordinated by Rita Hook a. Provided $2,000 to La Via, a registered NGO, to support a full time medical assistant (annual salary) at an orphanage in Moldova for the second year. John and Rachel (Hook) Koon have been missionaries there for several years and have made a difference in the lives of many abandoned children. The Med Asst teaches basic hygiene and socialization. 11 staff. Rita has petitioned to support the salary of the medical assistant next year for the third year.</p><p>H. GERMANY - requested by Chuck Stein a. Provided $500 to support the Rotary Club of Passau – Dreifluessestadt (Germany) for which Chuck Stein’s niece requested financial assistance to rebuild a music museum that was destroyed by a flood in 2013. </p><p>I. Interventional Radiology - Eight physicians sponsored by District 6690 clubs have been trained at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in interventional radiology with Dr. Bill Shiels.
