<p> Chemistry’s Life Lessons- Being Positive: Lose a Negative!</p><p>“Don’t be a cynic…and bewail and moan. Omit the negative propositions…Set down nothing that will not help somebody.”-Ralph Waldo Emerson</p><p>In the chemical world, all pure elements are neutral: each atom of an element has an equal number of positive protons (in the atom’s nucleus) and negative electrons (in the atom’s electron orbitals). However, atoms may become an ion with a positive or negative charge. The positively charged atoms are called cations; the negatively charged atoms are called anions.</p><p>In our world, which type of “ion” would we seek to be: cations or anions? The positive atoms of course! But it’s easy for people to misunderstand just how those positive cations form.</p><p>Some people (quite logically!) think that atoms become positive because other atoms come along and give them extra protons-extra positives. But this giving and receiving of positive PROTONS never happens in a chemical reaction. NEVER!!!</p><p>Now let’s think about our own lives. DO we become more positive when we receive more “stuff”? How positive would we become if we just wait to receive positive things? That perfect schedule at the start of the school year…the driver’s license when we turn 16…the perfect relationship with family or friends…NO. That’s not how it works in chemistry: neutral atoms don’t become positive by gaining positives.</p><p>Rather, the atoms become POSITIVE by losing their electrons-losing their negatives. The more electrons that an atom loses, the more positive it becomes! What a more positive world it would be if we all could lose just one tiny “electron” in our lives…something small, yet negative that we can hold so tightly to ourselves. </p><p>Reflecting : What may be an “electron” in your own life that you would like to lose during this school year?
