You Are Cordially Invited to Tea with Miss Alexandra

You are cordially invited to “Tea with Miss Alexandra!” When: March 8th, 2010 Where: Room 14

We will dine and delight with all the famous Maycomb citizens from the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird.” This constitutes your final for this trimester, and will be graded as a test.

Your responsibilities:

 Choose a character from the novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird”  Be very familiar with that character; you will assume his/her identity!  Bring a southern-style dish for the social hour (research time provided)  Wear one article of clothing or accessory that suits your character  Interact with others as your character  Complete character analysis and turn in on the day of the tea party (instructions below)  Create a one minute film of your character (instructions below)

Character Analysis:

You will write a 350-500 word character analysis. The information about your character must be taken from the book. If, for example, as with Miss Maudie, you don’t know what her occupation was, you will make it up. You will need to think of what she is like, and what a logical career for her would have been. You may email the final product to [email protected], or turn in a paper copy. The essay will be graded using the State Writing Standard (attached).

The information that must be included:

1. Your (character’s) name 2. Your age 3. Your place of birth 4. Your occupation (if a child, say “student”) 5. Details about your family life (spouse, children, siblings, parents…) 6. Your accomplishments/achievements. What are you known for? Your interests. What do you like to do? 7. Your attitude/feelings toward: A. The Finches B. The Trial C. Tom Robinson 8. Your status at the end of the novel. What are you up to?

Character Film:

Using Windows Movie Maker, you will create a one and a half minute film of your character. You have a great deal of freedom with this aspect of the project. You may film a scene from the book that heavily involves your character; you may have Scout being interviewed as an adult about the court case; you may have Atticus taking a film crew on a “tour” of Maycomb showing them the sights of the town….choose something that fits your character, displays understanding of the events of the book and the significant themes and issues. Students may certainly work together on this part of the project—if you work with a partner, the length of the movie must double. If three students work together, the length must triple.

The 90 seconds is a minimum time—it may certainly be longer. All films should be polished pieces, with a title introduction and ending credits, and soundtrack.

We will watch your movies during the tea party!

______

INTERESTED IN EXTRA CREDIT?

You will receive extra points if you:

Dress from head to toe as your character Bring a (school-appropriate) three-dimensional prop that suits your character

This is A MAJOR GRADE: If there are any insurmountable issues that you have with this project (regarding the food preparation, etc.), you need to let me know immediately. You must let me know by Wednesday the 3rd so that we can quickly solve any issues. If you don’t inform me by then of any issues, you will be held accountable for all portions of the project.

Total Value: Character Analysis: 84 points Film 36 points Tea Party Preparation (clothes and food): 20 points

Total: 140
