(May 3, 2012) – On Saturday, May 12, Delaware letter carriers will again help Stamp Out Hunger in order to provide food assistance to Delawareans who depend on the Food Bank of Delaware’s network of hunger-relief partners for support.

To help Stamp Out Hunger, simply leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned fruits and vegetables, canned meats, cereals and more next to the mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 12. New this year, postal customers will receive a special Stamp Out Hunger plastic bag in their mailbox a few days prior to the drive.

Food items should be in non-breakable containers, such as boxes and cans. Local and rural letter carriers will be collecting donations from homes across the state and delivering them to the Food Bank of Delaware.

Now in its 20th year, the Stamp Out Hunger effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. Last year, letter carriers in Delaware collected more than 84,000 pounds of food for Delawareans struggling to put meals on the table. With summer vacation approaching, many Delawareans, especially children, who rely on the free and reduced-price lunch program at school, are at risk of hunger over the summer months.

“The annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive comes at a very critical time for us,” said Patricia Beebe, Food Bank of Delaware President & CEO. “This annual food drive allows us to stock the shelves of our partner agencies just in time for the summer months. Summer is particularly difficult for the families we serve. No school means no free or reduced-price meals for thousands of children in the state. Families already struggling to put meals on the table are now digging deeper to stretch limited food budgets.”

The Food Bank of Delaware’s most needed food items include:  Tuna fish  Canned fruits and vegetables  Peanut butter  Cereal  Pasta  Macaroni and cheese  Canned soups  Canned meats

For more information about the annual Stamp Out Hunger effort visit www.helpstampouthunger.com. # # #

The Food Bank of Delaware distributes between seven and 10 million pounds of food and grocery products each year through its network of 475 hunger-relief program partners throughout the state and also provides thousands of meals a month for children through the After-School www.fbd.org

Feeding Program, the Summer Food Service Program and the Backpack Program. The Food Bank’s hunger-relief programs directly provide for 241,600 Delawareans at risk of going without meals each year.
