<p> PBIS COOL TOOL Pioneer Middle School</p><p>School-Wide Expectation: Voice Levels Name of the Skill: Using the 0-4 Voice Levels</p><p>Purpose of the Lesson:</p><p>To teach students the awareness of voice level and what level is appropriate for a variety of school settings.</p><p>Teaching Examples: Explain to class why different voice levels are important and necessary at different times and places throughout school. Find some examples from everyday life: playground, hallway, lunch room, school bus, church, football game, movie theater, cell phones in public places, etc.</p><p>Teach/Model:</p><p>0 = Silent</p><p>1 = Whisper</p><p>2 = Conversation: One – to – one, or small group – can’t be heard on the other side of the room.</p><p>3= Presentation: Speaking to a whole room</p><p>4= Emergency/Shouting: Outdoors, speaking to a very large group, or maybe gym class only! Kids Activities/Role-Plays:</p><p>After modeling each voice level for class… play a game in which you call on a student and have them tell you something (pick a fun topic e.g. “ I like (favorite sport) because…”, or a topic related to that day’s instruction.)</p><p>The student needs to respond in a voice level that matches the number of fingers you are holding up. If you hold up 4 fingers, the correct student response is “I can’t use that voice level because it is not an emergency and/or we are not outside.” </p><p>Have class monitor the student’s voice level and give feedback. </p><p>Follow-Up Reinforcement Activities:</p><p>Frequently pre-correct, using the finger sin, the expected voice level when transitioning between activities and places. For students who are not speaking appropriately, ask them if they can tell you, or show you, the correct voice level, etc. Randomly, and intermittently, acknowledge students who show especially good use of appropriate voice level. </p>
