Habitat for Humanity

Winter Break Trip 2009

What is Habitat? Habitat is a “nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry.” The organization does not simply give people houses, but provides low income families with affordable housing. For more information visit www.habitat.org

Dates: The trip will take up the first week of winter break. Unless agreed upon by all members of a group, the trips will leave Saturday, Dec 12, and return Sunday, Dec 20.

Destination: Anywhere from FL to LA to MS.

Work: No construction/work experience required. The type of work varies for each location, from pouring foundations to shingling roofs, although it usually involves some sort of construction.

Fun (besides the work): Generally you can find things to do every night. Sometimes they are set up by the affiliate you are working with (such as flag football with your co-volunteers), and other times you have to find them on your own (such as star gazing in New Mexico, or visiting a haunted house in which Jimmy Carter spent his youth).

Housing: Housing is provided by the affiliate with which you are working. This could range from the floor of a church classroom to a bed in a house owned by the affiliate. There is a chance you will be staying with another Campus Chapter group during your stay.

Expenses: This is only an estimate for the total cost. This depends on which affiliates we work with, since some are farther away, and some ask for a larger affiliate contribution. Included: Transportation Lodging Van Rental Gas ------$100-$150 Total The expenses do not cover the food for the week. For each individual the trip actually costs at least twice this amount, although this is offset by SG funding and our own fundraisers.

Applications: Applications are due the Friday of 4th week (Oct. 23rd), although priority will go to those who get their applications in sooner. Applications will be available for download though http://habitat.uchicago.edu, listhost, or by contacting a coordinator ([email protected]). Once completed, please submit applications to [email protected] and [email protected]

Factors that determine your ranking include (in approximate order): Age (we need drivers, so if you are 21+ then you’re in), the application questions (not experience, but why you want to go), date of submission, seniority (since this might be the last chance for some of us).
