Revolutions in Asia: Mohandas Gandhi vs. Mao Zedong Which is a more effective method of resisting oppressive rule – violence or nonviolence?

“Three quarters of the miseries and misunderstandings in the world would finish if people were to put n the shoes of their adversaries and understand their points of view.” Mohandas K. Gandhi

“Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.” Mao Zedong

During the first half of the 20th century, two countries, India and China sought to change their governments. Mohandas K. Gandhi led a nonviolent resistance movement in India to end British Rule. Mao Zedong led a communist revolution in China against the oppressive rule of the Nationalists. Both of these leaders had the same aims but different methods. Gandhi used a form of non-violent resistance called satyagraha. Mao Zedong promoted a violent communist revolution of peasants against the landowners and the government, and as leader of China instituted a totalitarian government on a large scale. During this unit, we will attempt to “put on the shoes” of both these leaders in order to understand their motivations, actions and goals and evaluate which “fit best.” Monday Tuesday Wed/Thurs BLOCK Friday 4 5 6-7 8 Introduction to Gandhi and India Gandhi and India Revolutionary leaders in Asia: Gandhi and Mao Zedong 11 12 13-14 15 NO SCHOOL –SPRING BREAK 18 19 DUE: HW #1 20-21 22 Mao and the Chinese Quiz #1 Debate Prep: Document Debate Prep: Document Revolution Study Study Mao’s Rule of China Wednesday – 1st period meets Friday 5th period meets Thursday – 2nd period meets 25 26 DUE: HW #2 27-28 DUE: Draft 29 DUE: Unit Debate Prep: Research and Quiz #2 outline Packets with final Outline Debate Prep: Research and outline Writing skills practice Outline Gandhi vs. Mao Debates In-class essay Homework #1 (10 points): DUE Tuesday 4/19 Read p. 453-455 &563-565.
