After you answer the questions, create your FLOW MAP and VISUAL ONE-PAGER of this chapter.

(1) After we survived the Land of the Lotus

(LOW-tuss) Eaters, my crew and I had gone days

without food, and we were now at the point of

starvation. With each day, Death tightened his

grip around our weakened souls. Then, suddenly, we

spotted a small isle in the distance. We all jumped

for joy as we approached and saw goats grazing on

the mountainside, a sure sign of vegetation. We

anchored the ship and the crew, and I invaded the

island. Our extreme hunger blinded us from the danger that was awaiting us. We

could smell fresh meat roasting in a nearby cave. This aroma was too much for our

starving bodies. The crew and I rushed inside, and before we knew it, the large

body of a Cyclops (SYE-clopps) (a one-eyed giant) loomed above us. This is when I

realized we had entered the Land of the Cyclops. The three sons of Uranus and

Gaea inhabited this isle and we were drawn to the cave of Polyphemus (pol-ee-

FEE-mus). STUDENT NAME:

(2) The Cyclopes scooped up two of the men and devoured them immediately as the rest of us raced for cover. Polyphemus then covered the opening of the cave with a gigantic boulder so that none of us could escape. As soon as the giant moved out of earshot, we gathered desperately to devise a plan.

(3) That night, I approached the Cyclops with a huge jug of wine which I offered the giant. The Cyclops, being somewhat intelligent could sense a trick.

“You try to trick me,” the Cyclops said with a thunderous voice. “I am no fool.

First, tell me your name. Then, you drink the wine before I do.”

(4) I replied, “My name is No Man." With that, I took a huge gulp of wine.

My crew was obviously puzzled. They wondered why I lied about my name; however, they also knew to trust their king. We were not going to get out of that cave with our mortal strength. To survive this ordeal, we were going to need to use our minds. Polyphemus believed me and proceeded to drink up the entire jug. Soon after, the giant now very drunk, fell fast asleep.

(5) Working diligently, the crew and I heated a huge log that we had sharpened at one end. Working together as a team, my crew and I carefully carried the burning log over to the slumbering Cyclops. With one, big push, we shoved the point of the log into the Cyclops' single eye. Polyphemus awoke instantly in a shriek of pain. He thrust the huge log out of his eye and cried out to his brothers. “My eye! My eye!” he screamed in despair. “My brothers, they have blinded me!”

(6) His brothers came rushing over to Polyphemus’ cave. Since the huge bolder was still blocking the entrance to the cave, the brothers stood outside and asked, "Has any man hurt you?" STUDENT NAME:

(7) Polyphemus replied in pain, "No Man has hurt me, No Man!"

(8) “If no man is hurting you, brother, then why do you scream with such pain?” his brothers asked. After giving it a little thought, the brothers believed the gods were putting their brother in pain, so they ran away quickly.

(9) Polyphemus was very furious now and became determined not to let us out of his cave. In the morning, when he let his goats out to graze, he ran his hand over every goat making sure we were not escaping. He failed to notice that the goats were tied together, and we hung to their bellies as they scurried out of the cave.

(10) As we ran toward our ships, I cried back to

Polyphemus telling him who I really was. “Polyphemus, hear me!” I shouted from my ship. “Let it be known that it was Odysseus, king of Ithaca, who hurt and blinded you!” My pride swelled up within me, and I became even more boastful, despite my men’s pleas to remain silent. “I am Odysseus, and I can do anything!”

(11) “My lord, please remain silent,” one of my men said. The monster may be blind, be he is not deaf. He will hear where we are.” Polyphemus lifted a huge rock and hurled it at our ship. The boulder barely missed us; a few feet closer, and we would have perished. The Cyclops became so angry that he called upon the great Poseidon to punish us. With that a strong breeze swept the ocean and thrust us blindly out to sea. We had survived the Cyclops, but our nightmare was far from over.
