29

Methodology for Teaching the Fundamentals of CRRT C. A. Peck BSN, RN Hasbro Children’s Hospital, Intensive Care Unit, Providence, Rhode Island Continuous renal replacement therapy is now utilized more frequently to treat the vast complexities of pediatric diagnoses in the acute care setting. The leadership team and staff of the pediatric intensive care unit utilized the QSEN knowledge, skill, and attitude methodology (KSA) to educate the nursing staff regarding the essentials of CCRT. A cohort of “supertrainers” was created to define and meet the needs of the critical care nurse with a patient undergoing renal therapy while establishing proficiency in all three areas listed. The professional nurse will demonstrate foundational knowledge and integrate core assessment skills while recognizing and responding to acute changes in the renal system. Knowledge was gained through lectures, journal reviews, and completion of annual online learning modules. The skills requirement was met through practice of wet primes of the circuit according to policy and procedures for access, management and discontinuation of therapy. In order to meet the attitude criteria, the nurse must express the importance of patient safety in regards to CRRT, will show accountability through teamwork, possess a strong sense of responsibility as well as support, advocate, and educate the patient and family. It is the goal of the unit to have every nurse become competent to care for these complex patients in a safe, knowledgeable environment.

593 Eddy Street Providence, RI 02874 Fax # 401-444-8695 [email protected]
