FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 8, 2001

VA Creates Regional Liaisons To Veterans Groups WASHINGTON -- Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi announced today the creation of a new network of regional liaisons who will work with state and local elements of veterans service organizations (VSOs). "VSOs are our partners in developing solutions, as well as in identifying problems," Principi said. "By strengthening our ties to the VSOs at the state and local levels, we can improve VA’s service to America’s veterans." The six regional liaisons will be stationed throughout the country according to veteran population and geographical areas. They will be located in Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities. Working with community-based veteran organizations, including state directors of veterans affairs, the liaisons will attend conventions, meetings and other functions to provide a communications channel between veterans and VA. They will also coordinate outreach activities to inform veterans and the public of VA programs. Selected as regional liaisons are Bruce G. Nitsche of Cape Coral, Fla., former national director of voluntary services for Disabled American Veterans (DAV); Jon Ray Schneider of Des Moines, Iowa, past national director of Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA); Paul A. Spera of Attleboro, Mass., former national commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW); and Butch Miller of Woodbridge, Va., former national commander of The American Legion. Two liaison positions are in the selection process. John W. Smart, director of VSO Liaisons, himself a past VFW national commander, will coordinate the regional liaisons from VA's Central Office in Washington, D.C.

# # #
