<p> Preventing Pressure Ulcers in the ICU</p><p>What is a pressure ulcer?</p><p>A pressure ulcer is an injury to the skin and the tissue beneath it caused by prolonged pressure. Skin damage can occur over bony body parts when patients sit or lie in one position for long periods of time. A pressure ulcer is a serious problem in the hospital and for patients at home who have difficulty moving around or shifting their weight. Pressure ulcers can slow recovery, cause pain and lead to other problems. </p><p>What actions are taken on this unit to prevent pressure ulcers from developing?</p><p>Our nurses focus first on preventing pressure ulcers. One way they do that is by thoroughly inspecting each patient’s skin daily. Frequent skin inspections are important for finding early signs of developing skin redness or damage. Position changes and careful skin care are also very important in preventing pressure ulcers.</p><p>What can family members do to help?</p><p>Family members are welcome to assist the nursing staff in their efforts to prevent pressure ulcers. Family members should ask their nurse how they can be of help. Some suggestions below:</p><p> Encourage the patient that cooperation with turning and skin inspections is to their benefit  Notify the nurse if linens are wet or soiled  Watch for tubing or medical devices that may be rubbing on, trapped under or compressing skin  Anticipate regular repositioning of your loved one</p>
