<p> UNIVERSITY OF DERBY JOB DESCRIPTION</p><p>JOB TITLE Post-Doctoral Research Fellow – Building Environment </p><p>DEPARTMENT / College of Engineering and Technology COLLEGE</p><p>LOCATION Derby</p><p>JOB NUMBER 0399-17 SALARY £23,879 - £32,004 per annum </p><p>REPORTS TO Principal Investigator</p><p>Role Summary Having gained proven experience in research and being a specialist in the discipline with a relevant PhD, you will be contributing towards current, ongoing research projects as well as taking appropriate initiatives towards setting up new research project(s), contributing ideas and developing research methodologies and techniques. Regularly publish high quality papers in reputable outlets and present research findings at conferences. Contribute as necessary to teaching through supervision of postgraduate students and / or supervision of projects. </p><p>In the framework of Future Cities concept the Department of Built Environment develops and researches emerging technologies in the sector to deal with climate change, human health, heritage and citizen protection, energy consumption, building surveying and environmental quality and sustainable design. It is our focus to be at the forefront of what is the science of cities from a multidisciplinary base in designing and modelling. </p><p>We are therefore seeking a Research Fellow to join an enthusiastic and multidisciplinary research team of academics, post-docs and PhD students with a strong track-record in this field. The successful applicant will research, develop and evaluate innovative design techniques, algorithms and simulation tools to enable efficient interior and exterior urban smart environments. Applicants should be good communicators able to collaborate with others, take a methodological approach to their work, and be hard-working and reliable.</p><p>1 Principal Accountabilities 1. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, contribute to the development of new knowledge and techniques to the research project(s).</p><p>2. Contribute to the determination of appropriate research methodologies for the project(s).</p><p>3. Analyse research findings and determine the need for further investigation.</p><p>4. To disseminate research findings through the publication of high quality peer-reviewed papers, supporting engagement with conferences and seminars.</p><p>5. Lead and assist with the preparation of proposals and applications to both external and/or internal bodies for funding, contractual or accreditation purposes.</p><p>6. Support the supervision of postgraduate research students in conjunction with other staff.</p><p>7. Assist in the development of student research skills, for example as part of a postgraduate supervision team.</p><p>8. Plan and manage own research activity and initiate research relevant to the discipline or research project(s).</p><p>9. Where opportunities exist within the research project(s), support the development and delivery of business engagement activities, developing entrepreneurial links with external organisations.</p><p>10. Contribute to the writing of collective bids for funding, and, where funders permit, write individual bids for funding with appropriate support.</p><p>11. Undertake appropriate training and staff development.</p><p>Other </p><p>1. Provide guidance as required to other colleagues working on related research project(s).</p><p>2. Assist and help informally students working in the same research discipline.</p><p>3. Develop internal and external contacts with other academic staff to form collaborative relationships and assist with their research project(s).</p><p>4. Understand own development needs and formulate a personal development plan.</p><p>5. Observe and implement University policies and procedures.</p><p>Person Specification</p><p>2 Essential Criteria</p><p>• Qualifications  PhD (awarded or being very close to completing) in a relevant discipline</p><p>• Experience  A track record of excellent quality papers in peer-reviewed journals appropriate for and commensurate with their career level. </p><p> Well-organised and self-motivated with the ability to manage the day-to-day running of a research project, to identify research objectives and to carry out appropriate research activities within a given timescale, demonstrating the ability to work cooperatively with colleagues.</p><p> Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at conferences.</p><p> Possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes</p><p>• Skills, knowledge and abilities  Ability to communicate complex information clearly both in writing and presentations</p><p> Analytical ability to facilitate conceptual thinking, innovation and creativity</p><p> Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with colleagues, internally and externally</p><p> Ability to use initiative and creativity to solve problems in a research context</p><p> Self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team</p><p>• Business requirements  Demonstrate competences, core behaviours and supplementary behaviours that support and promote the University’s core value</p><p> Flexible to the needs of others</p><p> Committed to a high-performance culture, fostering continuous improvement and driving quality</p><p> Able to take a flexible approach to work</p><p> o Travel between sites and occasionally overseas for work</p><p> o Some evening and occasional weekend work</p><p>Desirable Criteria</p><p>• Experience  Experience of assisting with grant applications</p><p>3  Experience of generating research or knowledge exchange income</p><p> Excellent oral and written communication skills.</p><p>Benefits </p><p>As well as competitive pay scales, we offer generous holiday entitlement.
