Questions: What rations did the rebels usually receive? What is a shell jacket? Why do you suppose the South had so much trouble supplying the armies? Describe several punishments used by the officers. What kind of equipment did the Southern soldier carry after he became experienced? Choose a group of students to stage (act out) the interview. Give the group a copy of the interview to review and prepare. Set up the classroom in a manner that will allow the interview to be the focal point. Put questions and phrases on the overhead to be copied by students. Lesson Sequence: 1. Stage the interview. Have students decipher vocabulary in context. Discussion Questions Students write a journal entry from the point of view of a soldier in the interview.</p><p>Application/Practice 1. Stage interview - students will watch chosen group perform interview. Discuss vocabulary phrases within context of interview and decipher meaning as a whole group. Answer discussion questions in small groups/discuss whole group. Assessment: Students will write journal entry from the point of view of a soldier that describes what life in the army is like.
