Yeas Greenhouse Technician.

April 2013

1 INTRODUCTION

INDEX PLANTARUM

omne ignotum pro magnifico est –

Everything Unknown Is Taken As Marvelous

TACTTUS-AGRICOLA XXX

The Index Plantarum is a working list of plants growing in the Biology greenhouse at McMaster University.

The Index Plantarum is organized in the following manner: Section 1 – Monocotyledonous plants Page 4 to page 13 Section 2 – Eudicotyledonous plants Page 14 to page 31 Section 3 – Pterophyta (The Ferns) Page 32 to page 34 Section 4 – Conifers Page 35 to page 38 Cycads Equisetum Selaginella Psilotum Jungermania (formerly Marchantia) Podocarpus

Each plant family name, plant genus and species was researched using three sources of information. They were: 1. The International Plant Name Index 2. The Plant List 3. World Checklist of Selected Plant Families

All of the plant families were verified using the most up to date information provided at the “World Checklist of Selected Plant Families”. (Check “References Used” at the end of this introduction for the web address). The information at World Checklist of Selected Plant Families was used “with the permission of the Trustees of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew”.

An asterisk (*) beside a plant family name indicates that the family name is unresolved and is currently being researched. When the family name is accepted by the scientific community, appropriate changes will be made.

Plant families are organized alphabetically in each section.

Plant Names

Within each section in the Index Plantarum plant names are organized alphabetically under each plant family.

2 Each plant name has been checked and verified using the references listed in this document. Where a plant name is unresolved, a notation to that effect is made under the plant name. Every plant name is recorded in the Index Plantarum in a specific manner.

For example: Anthurium hookeri Kunth Enum. Pl. 3:74 (1841)

Giant Bird-Nest Anthurium St. Lucia to Northern South America

-each plant name has a currently accepted genus and species -the author’s name (abbreviated) credited with first publishing that name -the name of the publication (abbreviated) and the date when the plant name appeared for the first time in the scientific literature -at least one common name (if any) -a place of origin where the plant is native

STATISTICS

Number of families in the plant collection – 77

Number of genera in the plant collection – 150

Number of species in the plant collection – 217

REFERENCES USED

1.
