<p>Name: ______Date: ______Period #: ______</p><p>Sedimentary Rock Creation Lab Part 2</p><p>Directions: Follow procedures below.</p><p>Materials:</p><p>1 Paper Cup 250 ml Beaker Water Epsom salt Hot Plate Tongs Plastic spoon Goggles Balance Graduated Cylinder Coffee Filter Stirring Rod Sand</p><p>Part 1: Making Seawater</p><p>1. Put on goggles 2. Measure 20 grams of Epsom salt and set it aside. (Make sure you zero it with the coffee filter on the balance.) 3. Measure 50 mls of water and pour into the beaker. 4. Place the beaker on the hot plate and heat the water until near boiling. 5. Gradually add the Epsom salt, stirring constantly with stirring rod until all of the salt is completely dissolved. </p><p>Part 2: Making Rock</p><p>1. Label a paper cup with your name and your shoulder partners name and period #. 2. Spoon 3-4 spoonfuls of sand into the paper cup. 3. Pour just enough “seawater solution” into the sand until all of the sand is very moist. 4. Place your paper cup by the window. Sedimentary Rock Assessment Questions</p><p>Directions: Complete when rock is dry and ready to be observed.</p><p>1. What happens when rocks bump into or rub past each other? What forms?</p><p>2. What happens to the bottom layer of sand as more and more sand piles up on top of it? Explain.</p><p>3. From the beginning to the end of this experiment, describe any changes in the sand in your cup.</p><p>4. Which rock (#1, #2 or #3) is your homemade rock most like? Why? What type of rock is this?</p><p>5. Based on your own rock creation, how did rock # ______(fill in answer from above) form? Explain.</p><p>6. What is holding the sand particles in both the real rock and the homemade rock together? Where did it come from?</p>
