E) Nutrient and Sediment Load Reduction Projection (If Applicable)

GRANT SUMMARY

A) Grant Information 1. Grant Number: 04-196-558-0 2. Project Title: Big Bear Lake Sediment Load Reduction Program 3. Project Purpose – Problem: Past studies have indicated that an estimated 33,000 cubic yards of nutrient loaded sediment reaches the Lake each year (Big Bear Municipal Water District, Management Plan, Page A1). The sediment is originating from several locations throughout the Big Bear Watershed. Focusing on the source of the problem on a case by case basis will decrease the sediment loads in a more successful manner. An abandoned ski resort known as Snow Forest Ski Area was chosen due to the lack of vegetative cover and highly erosive soils which is contributing to the sediment entering Big Bear Lake. Recent storm events have washed large amounts of sediment down Pine Knot Rd and Knickerbocker Creek which ultimately leads to Big Bear Lake. 4. Project Goals: a. Short-term Goals:. Install effective erosion control measures on the Snow Forest Ski area to prevent large amounts of sediment from washing down local streets and tributaries. b. Long-term Goals: To decrease the amount of sediment entering Big Bear Lake in order to improve aquatic and terrestrial species habitats. 5. Project Location: 34.23’N, 116.91”W, Big Bear Lake, Santa Ana Watershed a. Physical Size of Project: (miles, acres, b.
