<p> Geosciences 579: Hot Springs Chemistry</p><p>Syllabus: Fall 2016</p><p>Instructor Nancy Hinman CHCB 316 406-243-5277 Office hours: M 1:00 -2:00 pm, Tu 11-12 pm, and by appointment [email protected]</p><p>Course Information Meeting time: M W 8:00 – 9:30 am Meeting place: TBA</p><p>Moodle: We will use an online course supplement. Please be sure your official UM address is functioning properly as I must use this address to communicate with you.</p><p>Objectives and Outcomes: Students will learn what controls hot spring chemistry in different environments, including the chemistry of pH, major ions, trace elements, and nutrients. Students will apply these concepts to hot springs in ancient environments. Students will learn to clearly express their ideas verbally and in writing, as well as how to provide peer reviews of other students’ work. </p><p>Readings: Readings will be posted on the moodle shell. </p><p>Field Trip: We will have one field trip during the semester. Students are required to go on the field trip. In the event that a student is not able to attend, s/he will be required to compose a significant review paper on a topic of my choosing.</p><p>Grading: Grades will be based on course paper and all its steps (40 %), final presentation (20 %), and class participation, including presentations (40 %).</p><p>Tentative Schedule:</p><p>Week Topic </p><p>1 Introduction to Thermal Areas 2 Survey of Hot Springs Chemistry </p><p>3 Survey continued, 9/12 – no class</p><p>4 Survey continued – Writing Presentation (9/19 in CHCB 304 at 3:00 – 4:00, Yellowstone with field trip (9/24 to 9/26) </p><p>5 Yellowstone debriefing</p><p>6 Survey continued</p><p>7 Temperatures – how do we know?
