<p> Unit Study Guide</p><p>1. Simile - a figure of speech that draws a comparison between two different things, especially a phrase containing the word “like” or “as,” for example, “as white as a sheet”</p><p>2. metaphor - the application of a word or phrase to somebody or something that is not meant literally but to make a comparison, for example, saying that somebody is a snake</p><p>3. hyperbole - deliberate and obvious exaggeration used for effect, for example, “I could eat a million of these</p><p>4. alliteration - a poetic or literary effect achieved by using several words that begin with the same or similar consonants, as in “Whither wilt thou wander, wayfarer?”</p><p>5. repetition - the act or process of saying or writing something again, for example, “I am so tired, so tired.”</p><p>6. onomatopoeia - the formation or use of words that imitate the sound associated with the thing or action in question, for example, “hiss” and “buzz”</p><p>7. personification - the attribution of human qualities to objects or abstract notions.</p><p>8. simple sentence - sentence that takes the form of a single main clause for example, “I read the book.”</p><p>9. compound sentence - a sentence containing two or more clauses that can stand independently. For example, I am going to the store, and he is going to bed.</p><p>10. Theme – is a story that tells the underlying meaning or lesson learned.</p><p>11. Author’s purpose – the reason that the person wrote a particular selection.</p><p>12. Character Analysis – you analyze a character in a story by learning about his or her traits, emotions, or motivations.</p><p>13. Topic – general subject of the text</p><p>14. Plot – series of events that happen in a fiction selection (story)</p><p>15. Plot development – the order in which the events occur (events are things that happen in a story)</p><p>16. Sound – certain sounds in words can help to convey meaning and emotion 17. rhyme scheme – is the placement and frequency of rhyming words in a poem.</p><p>There once was a boy name Bob A Who thought that he was a glob. A He ran through the wash B But continued to slosh B Until he no longer slobbed. A</p><p>18. Internal rhyme – refers to words within the same line that rhyme.</p><p>19. Imagery – creates pictures in our minds with words</p><p>20. Mood or feeling of a story is created by the author’s tone.</p><p>21. Tone – the words an author chooses to use to create the story’s tone.</p><p>22. Point of View- a person’s opinion on an issue</p><p>23. Perspective – how the author feels about the subject </p><p>24. Irony- something said or written that uses humor based on words suggesting the opposite of their literal meaning. SYN: mockery, sarcasm, etc..</p><p>25. Situational Irony- an outcome that turns out to be very different from what was expected, the difference between what is expected to happen and what actually does.</p><p>26. Verbal Irony- a figure of speech in which what is said is the opposite of what is meant.</p><p>27. Dramatic irony- is when the words and actions of the characters of a work of literature have a different meaning for the reader than they do for the characters. This is the result of the reader having a greater knowledge than the characters themselves.</p><p>28. Flashback- when the author or character(s) refers back to an earlier situation in life.</p><p>29. Foreshadowing- to indicate or suggest something, usually something unpleasant, that is going to happen.</p><p>30. Symbol- something that stands for or represents something else, especially an object representing an abstraction. </p>
