<p> Study Guide: The Breadsister of Sinking Creek</p><p>1. Themes of this story :</p><p> Bravery – Maggie made the long trip to Frannie’s cabin with a stranger. Maggie jumped into the flooded river to save Lyons.</p><p> Hard worker – Maggie worked for the McGrew’s to earn a place to live, and then made bread to trade for the things she needed to stay in the cabin.</p><p> Friendship – Maggie and Annie kept each other alive in the avalanche. Maggie taught Annie to make bread. Jake checked in on Maggie to make sure she was ok and to visit with her. Jake helped her run away from her wedding.</p><p>2. Context Clues – use part of the story to understand the meaning of words. Be familiar with these words – be able to tell what clues give hints to the meanings:</p><p> Cantankerous – PG. 18 (1st paragraph)</p><p> Careening – PG 92 (last paragraph)</p><p> Roused - PG 103 ( 4th full paragraph on page)</p><p> Spectacles – PG 145 (last paragraph)</p><p>3. Summarizing with Main Ideas – use main ideas to write a summary of the story. Some main ideas of this story are:</p><p> Maggie leaves Philadelphia after her mother dies to find Frannie.</p><p> Frannie is gone when Maggie arrives.</p><p> Jake Logan finds Maggie at the cabin.</p><p> Maggie lives with the McGrew’s as a hired girl.</p><p> Maggie decides to trade bread so she can live alone in the cabin.</p><p> Maggie and Annie are buried in the snow.</p><p> Maggie’s cabin burns down.</p><p> Maggie decides to marry John.</p><p> Maggie and Jake run away from their weddings, they go west to find Frannie.</p><p>5. Put story elements into Beginning, Middle and End:</p><p> Beginning – From Maggie’s trip from Philadelphia to the time she moves into the cabin alone.</p><p> Middle – From the time Maggie moves into the cabin alone to the time the Cabin burns down.</p><p> End – From the time the cabin burns down to the time that Maggie and Jake Logan run away from the weddings.</p><p>6. Maggie was a brave pioneer woman who’s life was sometimes hard. She showed she was brave when she traveled across PA alone to find Aunt Frannie and when she fought to put out the fire. Her life was sometimes hard because she had to work as a servant for the McGrew’s and her mother died and Aunt Frannie had moved away.</p><p>8. Jake Logan was a smart mountain man who knows how to hunt and live off the land and how to make moccasins from deer hide.</p><p>9. Mr. McGrew liked to take charge of things and be important. He made Maggie come to live and work with him and he tried to make Maggie marry John.</p><p>10. The climax of the story was when the cabin burned down: John fell asleep when he should have been watching the fire. Maggie and John dug ditches to keep it from burning the cabin, but the wind blew it. Maggie was burned, but was able to crawl to a creek to save herself. The cabin burned to the ground.</p><p>11. The resolution of the story is when Maggie ran away from her wedding with Jake Logan. The people were waiting for the ceremony to start and Maggie and Jake told Annie that they were leaving. Annie promised to keep it a secret, so that they could get a head start. Maggie and Jake are going west to look for Aunt Frannie.</p><p>12. Elude - Hide away from.</p><p>13. Instinct - Ability to know by nature.</p><p>14. Sorrowful - Full of sadness.</p><p>15. Heathens - People who don’t believe in God</p><p>16. Cascading - Running down, flowing quickly.</p><p>17. Predicament - In trouble, having a problem. 18. Weariness - Very tired.</p><p>19. Solitude - Being alone.</p><p>20. Savages - Wild, or animal like.</p><p>21. Profits - Money made on something.</p><p>22. Wealth - Having Riches.</p>
