2017 Ohio Aquaculture Producer Bird Predation Survey

Yes No Have you had any unusual fish/crustacean losses this year (2017)? If you experienced losses, did you notice any dead fish or crustaceans? If you experienced losses, had you significantly changed farm management techniques on the affected culture system? Did you have a more than usual number of cormorants on your farm this year (2017)? Do you believe your production has been negatively affected since a cormorant depredation permit was not able to be obtained? Do you believe double-crested cormorants were the main fish-eating bird negatively affecting production?

1) How many acres or gallons do you believe were negatively affected by the presence of cormorants on your farm? Please specify ponds, outdoor recirculating &/or flow-through.

2) What species of fish/crustaceans had significant losses on your farm believed due to cormorant predation?

3) How many (approximate number) fish/crustaceans do you estimate to have lost in 2017 that you believe was due to cormorant predation?

4) When did cormorants appear on your farm and was this typical timing compared to previous years?

5) How long were the cormorants on your farm throughout the course of the year?

6) What is the approximate number of cormorants you have seen on your farm this year and is this a typical number compared to previous years? Economic Costs of Bird Depredation on Ohio Farms We appreciate your participation in this project to attempt to measure losses on Ohio farms due to bird depredation. The total costs to your farm include all your expenditures related to scaring and running birds. While cormorants are a major concern in Ohio, we have requested all relevant information regarding bird predation below.

I would appreciate it if you would fill in the attached form and return it to me, either by scanning and emailing it back, putting it in the mail to me, or taking it to your local OSU county Extension office. For any costs that I may have missed, please write those in.

Also, because we plan to calculate these costs by species, please complete below the number of acres stocked with each of these species during this current bird season:

Species Number of acres this current bird-scaring season Sportfish Largemouth bass (sport) Bluegill Hybrid bream Catfish (for sportfish) Yellow perch (for food and sport) Other: ______Other: ______Other: ______Rainbow trout Freshwater shrimp/prawn Crawfish Triploid grass carp/ white amur Golden shiners or fathead minnows Koi Paddlefish Yellow perch (food) Largemouth bass (food) Other: ______Please fill in with costs for this past year.
