How have robots been involved in space exploration?

2. Why is a robot often better suited for these tasks than a human?

3. What potential problems could result in a NASA robotic mission if the program is flawed?

4. What happens to a robot on an independent mission (i.e. the Mars rover) that completes its mission or ceases to function?

Part B: Design Problem You are a computer programmer working for NASA. NASA has designed a robot to explore a newly discovered planet. They need a rock and water sample for study. NASA has assigned you to write the program for this robot to collect the necessary samples and return safely to the ship with them.

Design Requirements

 Examine the planet recreation in the room.  Write a detailed, step by step, pseudocode for the NASA robot to exit the spaceship, collect the samples, and safely return to the ship with them.  Each step in your program should be numbered.  Steps should be specific and singular in action.  Design a way to designate different types of actions: movement, communication, sensing, etc. Use a symbol or different color.

*Remember-the robot will do exactly what you program and ONLY what you program*

High School

Valpak

Pseudocode-Robot Programming Student Worksheet

Created by Florida Advanced Technological Education Center, FLATE www.fl-ate.org • www.madeinflorida.org

Part C: Post-Activity Questions

1. Name an everyday product you use/consume. Considering the activity we completed above, how might robotics be involved in the manufacturing of that product?

2. List 3 different careers associated with robotics and manufacturing. Write a short sentence summary of what these careers do and possible jobs associated with.
