Bill Nye: Electricity - Note Skeleton

Name: ______Bill Nye: Electricity - Note Skeleton

During the video. 1. Electricity is the flow of tiny particles called electrons.

2. The word “circuit” is an old word that means “go around”. Electricity will flow in a closed circuit.

3. Electrons flowing through a wire are a lot like water flowing through a hose.

4. There is enough electricity coming out of a plug to stop your heart.

5. Resistors let some of the electrons go through

6. Voltage is like water pressure. Amps are like the speed of the flowing water. The units for voltage is volts. The unit for current is amps.

7. Watts are the combination of amps and voltage. Watts are the unit for power. You can calculate power: power = current X voltage

8. Electrons are pushed by chemical reactions (like in batteries) or by generators (by magnetism).

9. Chemicals are used to make power in a battery. When the chemicals in a battery are used up, it stops producing power.

10. Water falling through a dam runs generators to produce power. This is also called hydroelectric power.

11. Alternating current (AC) goes back and forth. This type of current is produced by a coil of wire and a magnet. This is called a motor.

12. Direct current (DC) goes in one direction. This type of current is produced by a battery.

13. A photovoltaic cell is another name for a solar panel. These convert sunlight to power. After the video.

1. Why do you think that keeping batteries in a refrigerator will cause the batteries to last longer? Batteries are a chemical reaction. A lower temperature slows down the chemical reaction

2. What did Michael Faraday mean when he said, “Madam, of what use is a new born child?” This new discovery (electromagnetism) has no immediate use, but later it will have lots of potential. Discoveries that don’t seem to be useful may be later in the future.

3. Why are birds safe when sitting on a power line? The birds don’t complete a circuit.
