<p> Minneapolis Public Schools Middle School Science Course Program</p><p>GRADE SIX</p><p>Models and Designs (FOSS) “Models and Designs” develops the concept of a scientific model and provides opportunities for students to create solutions to a variety of problems. Strong emphasis is placed in the construction of working models and solving real world problems. </p><p>Energy, Machines & Motion (STCMS) “Energy, Machines, and Motion” provides opportunities to explore both physical science and design concepts. Students investigate several forms of energy. They inquire into the nature of force and work. Inclined planes, pulleys, levers, and motors are used to show the advantages of simple machines. Students investigate motion produced by a constant force during the construction of mousetrap cars and a KINEX roller coaster. </p><p>Human Brain And Senses (Foss) “Human Brain And Senses” EXPLORES some routine, but complex brain activities: seeing, feeling, hearing, smelling, tasting, and remembering. Students investigate how the brain and senses acquire, interpret and respond to information. An emphasis on vision and touch leads to investigations of the structure and function of the sensory organs and the brain itself. MRI and EEG imaging techniques are used to reveal brain anatomy and activity. Students also explore learning, memory, and sensory dysfunction.</p><p>Supplemental Module: Microworlds (STC) “Microworlds” invites students to investigate progressively deeper into the microscopic world. Students make detailed observations of several common objects and examine the properties of magnifying lenses. Students become familiar with microscopes by viewing various inanimate objects and living specimens.</p><p>Supplemental Module: Experiments with Plants (STC) “Experiments with Plants” features rapid cycling Wisconsin Fast Plants as a vehicle for students learning how to design and conduct controlled investigative experiments. These long-term experiments require students observe and record data related to plant growth and development. </p><p>1</p>
