Comments on Nanotoxicology/Research 1/19/07

I am a college student majoring in Environmental Science and Toxicology. I have been closely following the issue of nanotech and nanotoxicology, relegating much of my time and attention to its research. Here I have jotted down some notes about areas that I think deserve attention:

*Do we know what happens when nanomaterials interact with substances in the environment? Do the nanoparticles bind to soil particles/other matter, and to what extent? Might they react with something to be changed chemically, or to have their toxicity neutralized? Differences between species of nanomaterials must also be noted. Obviously, life cycle studies of nanoproducts are eminently important. Industry is beginning to move (as it should be) toward processes that acknowledge and plan for all stages of a product’s existence (including its disposal).

*We already know a bit about nanoparticles’ reaction in biota. Dose-response curves need to be made.

*Take into account the harmful effects of nanoparticles in addition to the harmful effects of other pollutants (heavy metals, pesticides, incidental nanoparticulate air pollution, etc.), What is the total effect? Do these variables synergize? Negate each other?

*Slow down the private sector/commercialization until safety research and regulation has caught up. The manufacturers should be able to prove the safety of their products before the products are put into the market. They are the ones who are going to make a profit off their “new and improved” nano-products, so they should be the first to do scintillating studies of the EHS impacts. And, close the loopholes in testing (e.g., assuming the toxicity of nano titanium-dioxide is the same as coarser titanium dioxide)!

***** ********* ********** *********** We already have enough on our plates, what with global warming, persistent organic pollutants, deforestation, air and water pollution, and the like, so. . . let’s handle this issue the right way, and catch it before it snowballs!! ------***END COMMUNICATION***
