McLamb Messenger Third Grade Classroom News at WUES

Issue 1: August 22, 2016

Dear Parents,

Greetings! I’m looking forward to working with this wonderful group of children this year. We had a busy and fun first day. I hope your child came home excited and happy about third grade. Below is our daily schedule:

7:35-8:40 Pledge/Announcements/Morning work: Grammar, DOL, Analogy, Handwriting, Journal, Writer’s Notebook 8:40-9:40 Reading 9:40-9:55 Quick snack and rest room break 9:55-10:45 Ancillary 10:45-12:26 Math 12:26-1:00 Lunch/rest room 1:00-1:30 Recess/rest room 1:30-2:15 Spelling/Wordly Wise/DEAR 2:15-2:45 Science/Social Studies 2:45-3:00 Reflection and Agenda 3:00 Dismissal

We have an action packed day in room 210. Please be sure your child arrives at sc hool at 7:35, when the school day offiially begins. Morning work commences as s oon as your child enters the classroom. Instruction begins promptly at 7:45 with t he pledge, announcements, journal, and other warm up activities. I would prefer t hat your child be at their desk ready to learn no later than 7:40. I will have daily “DO NOW” instructions on the board each morning so your child will know what is to be done each morning when they walk into the classroom.

I understand the first few days will be difficult due to parking issues. After the first few days students arriving after 7:45 will be marked as tardy. Early arrivers a re not permitted in the third grade hallways or classrooms until the first bell at 7:3 5. They will need to wait outside of the school buildings or go to the cafeteria for breakfast. In case of inclement weather, early arrivers should wait in the cafeteria. Students arriving after 9:30 will be marked as absent for the day, unless the child has a doctor’s appointment or medical excuse. An authentic note from the health care professional must accompany the child upon returning to school that day. Ho wever, if your child arrives to school with a health care note after the first four ho urs of school (afternoon), it is marked as an excused absence. In order for an abse nce to be considered excused, the school will need a note (hand written or e-mail) from you within three days of the absence. You may email your excuse to me an d I will forward to the registrar.

Every Monday (unless it is a holiday), graded papers/tests and school announcements will be sent home in the West U Monday folder. This folder is a means of weekly communication between teacher, school, and parent. Please read the contents of the folder carefully. Beginning next week, you will also find a conduct sheet stapled inside the folder. Please sign the conduct sheet and review the graded work each week. Keep the graded work and return only the work that requires a signature, school forms of interest to you, and the folder no later than Wednesday of each week.

I also have a class webpage that is accessible from the school’s website. I will also send out via email a weekly class newsletter with parent information. Do understand that I will try my best to send out the newsletter and update the website weekly however there may be some glitches time to time. Please understand that these things may happen.

This week your child will receive a homework folder along with any needed worksheets and instructions. Along with the folder will be an agenda book. Please check the folder and sign the agenda book daily. Your child will also need to read at least 30 minutes 4 times a week as part of his/her homework. Any reading material is acceptable and all reading required for homework is allowed. As a general rule, homework is given daily except on weekends and holidays.

The school’s weekly Pony Express will also be distributed via email only.

As the weather is fairly hot still, the air-conditioner works overtime. Please send a jacket or sweater for your child to wear in the classroom along with a water bottle for recess time.

I look forward to the opportunity of working with this class. My door is always open. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns as we proceed with the school year. I would like for you to complete the attached Parents/Student Information form and return by Friday.

Please mark your calendars for the following scheduled events:

Third Grade Parent Meeting Thursday, September 1 10:00-10:40 In MPR

Open House Thursday, September 8 6:30-7:30 (grades 3-5)

Sincerely, Alyce McLamb [email protected]
