TEST REPORT

STEREO IMPACT SEP/SIT FM1 ACOUSTIC REPORT

Written by: Glenn Mason Date: Aug 8, 2005

1. OVERVIEW The STEREO SEP/SIT acoustic test for the flight model 1 (FM1) unit was conducted Feb. 25, 2005, in the Bldg. 7 facilities at Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland. Sandy Shuman (GSFC), and Peter Walpole (UMd) supported instrument handling. Test engineering support was provided GSFC staff at the acoustic facility. (GSFC).

The instrument was bagged and hung from a fixture in the acoustic cell (see photo), and the test conducted following the reference document.

2. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS: STEREO IMPACT SIT Acoustics and Acoustic Test Plan, dated 17 Jan. 2005

3. PASS / FAIL CRITERIA:

The acoustic test was used to verify the survivability of the telescope Ni foils in launch configuration (sunshade door closed).

On Feb. 23, prior to the acoustic test, the telescope door was opened and the foils inspected and found intact. On Feb. 25, immediately after the acoustic test, the instrument was taken to the Bldg 2 clean room, removed from the bag, and the door opened. Visual inspection showed that the outer foil showed no deterioration. The inner foil could not be inspected without opening the telescope and so was not checked. Based on the performance of the outer foil, it was assumed that the inner foil was intact.

Update: on 4/25/05 the fm1 telescope was opened to inspect for evidence of a high voltage discharge that might have caused the failure of the ATOF stop count rate (PFR- 3011). At that time the inner foil was available for inspection, and no evidence of deterioration was seen.

Page 1 of 2 Page 1 of 2
