Lecture notes and assignments will be handed out in class PREREQUISITE: CHEM 1212K (Principles of Chemistry II)</p><p>COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will focus on familiarization with the scholarly literature used in the chemistry discipline. Students will study the techniques for efficient information searching, use of online data bases in locating books, journals, patents, scholarly papers, etc. Students will also focus on the MLA and the APA style for developing a list of references</p><p>Student learning outcomes according to ACS (American Chemical Society) guidelines (http://portal.acs.org/portal/acs/corg/content? _nfpb=true&_pageLabel=PP_SUPERARTICLE&node_id=1584&use_sec=false&sec_url_var=region1 ) will be: 1. Efficiently locate chemical and physical properties of substances, including their spectra. </p><p>2. Efficiently locate references for the synthesis or reactions of desired compounds or classes of compounds. </p><p>3. Efficiently locate references to a desired type of chemical transformation. </p><p>4. Identify the CAS Registry Number® of compounds. </p><p>5. Complete a comprehensive subject search. Utilize CA subject indexes and Index Guide. </p><p>6. Compile a complete bibliography of an author's publications. </p><p>7. Locate recent review articles on a subject. </p><p>8. Utilize a variety of methods to stay up-to-date on a subject. </p><p>9. Know the importance of patents and be able to search for patents on a subject. 10. Know about the availability and contents of relevant computerized databases (bibliographic and non bibliographic) and understand the basic techniques of on-line searching. (It is not anticipated that proficiency at on-line searching will be achieved, but the ability to interact productively with an information specialist is expected.) </p><p>ASSIGNMENTS:</p><p>Homework will be assigned on a regular basis. </p><p>Deadlines for homework assignments will be announced in class.
