<p> Chapter 8: The Guest Service of Travel and Tourism</p><p>Terminology  Accommodations: Typically a room for bedding, but also food, services, or anything else needed during a trip.  All-inclusive tour: Sold for a total price, including rooms, food, taxes, and most or all incidentals.  Carbon footprint: A person’s effect on the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. Also used in more general terms as being environmentally conscious.  Charter: Bulk purchase of a boat, plane, auto, or bus carrier. Sold by time, distance, head count, or a combination of these and other variables.  Code sharing: Agreement between two or more airlines that permits the use of viewing and booking on the system of another.  Conservation: Reasonable and responsible use of natural resources in the environment to ensure optimal current and future appreciation.  CVBs (Convention and Visitor Bureau): Organization that provides destination information regarding an area. It is financed through a bed tax at lodgings.  Destination management organization (DMO): A company that leads and promotes the marketing of a destination.  Eco-tourism: Travel to, or promotion of, environmentally conscious actions, typically based around awe-inspiring natural resources.  Excursion: A small trip, typically less than a day.  Hub and spoke: A configuration of air travel resembling wheel with a center hub being the main airport with spokes leading out of it connecting to smaller cities or other hubs.  Incentive travel: A reward tour, typically given to an employee by the organization for outstanding achievement. Usually a festive environment. Spouses typically accompany employee.  Niche travel: A small, unique area of specialty or special interest.  Open jaw: A flight in which a passenger arrives at one point and departs from another, making an outline of an open jaw on the map.  Pension: is a French term meaning guesthouse or a boarding house. It is typically associated with a more basic property. It may involve meals. It is also used to describe payment for accommodations.  Tourism: Everything associated with traveling more than 50 miles from home, typically for leisure. To expand, tourism includes all activities in a complex system involving everything that goes into awareness, searching, traveling, accommodations, activities, and post-travel experiences.  Yield management: Pricing structure common to air and hotel companies. The goal is to optimize profit while balancing supply and demand.</p>
