Medicine by Design New Ideas Fund 2018

Medicine by Design New Ideas Fund 2018

1. INTRODUCTION AND ELIGIBILITY Medicine by Design harnesses the exceptional expertise at the University of Toronto and its affiliated hospitals at the convergence of physical and life sciences, engineering, mathematics and medicine to undertake transformative research in regenerative medicine and cell therapy. It fosters unique multidisciplinary collaborations and uses engineering design principles and quantitative biological modelling to develop new approaches and make breakthroughs. Medicine by Design is made possible thanks in part to a grant from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF).

Medicine by Design invests strategically in transformative research with focus on the following scientific priority areas: 1) developing cell therapies to cure disease; 2) finding new approaches to promote endogenous repair and regeneration; 3) accelerating the path from basic research to clinical application; and 4) addressing long-standing fundamental questions in regenerative medicine.

The Medicine by Design New Ideas Fund 2018 will focus on seeding new ideas with potentially significant impact on regenerative medicine research and translation. Special consideration will be given to those proposals that combine a new idea with a clear translational outcome and pathway.

Proposals from investigators new to the regenerative medicine community or those who are not leading other Medicine by Design projects are encouraged.

Each funded project will receive up to $100,000 per year, for a two-year period from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2020. Each project must have only one Lead Principal Investigator (PI), and no more than 2 co-investigators. All investigators must have a faculty appointment with the University of Toronto.

The first step in the application process involves submitting an Expression of Intent (EOI). The EOI is due by Monday, November 27, 2017 at 5 p.m. EST. You will be informed within 6 weeks if your project has been selected to proceed to the full application stage (i.e. Request for Application (RFA); see below for details). Only one EOI will be accepted from the same lead investigator. 2

2. APPLICATION PACKAGE Only complete the RFA if your EOI has been shortlisted.

There are four sections to the RFA: 1) Summary; 2) Proposal; 3) Team; 4) Budget Justification. In addition, a complete budget sheet is required.

The formatting requirements for this document are:  Each section must start at the top of the page using the heading title and sub-section number and section titles.

 Arial size 11 font, with 1-inch (2.54 cm) margins, 1.15-line spacing.

Send the RFA document (in Word format, do not convert to PDF) and budget sheet (in Excel format, do not convert to PDF) by email to Payam Zahedi ([email protected]). The combined maximum file size of the RFA document and budget sheet must not exceed 10MB. Notification of receipt will be sent within one business day. Submission deadline is Monday, January 15, 2018 at 5 p.m. EST. Proposals will be evaluated by a panel of expert reviewers. Successful applicants will be notified within 60 days.

The lead PI on the RFA must register in My Research Application (MRA) at http://aws.utoronto.ca/services/my-research-mr/ and submit the RFA document and budget sheet via this portal in addition to sending directly to Medicine by Design, as per the deadline above. This will help Medicine by Design with the reporting/tracking to the CFREF and ensures that the correct departmental or divisional approvals are in place. If you do not have an account with MRA already please contact RAISE Help at 416-946-5000 or [email protected] as soon as possible to initiate this process. The program name in MRA for this competition is “MbD New Ideas”. 3

SECTION 1.
