It is a yearlong class. The skills and concepts of this course are driven by the California State Standards.

The Standards we will cover include:

 Atomic and Molecular Structure; 1a-g,j  Chemical Thermodynamics; 7a-d  Chemical Bonds; 2a-h  Reaction Rates; 8a-d  Conservation of Matter and  Chemical Equilibrium; 9a-c Stoichiometry; 3a-g  Organic Chemistry and  Gases and Their Properties; 4 a-i Biochemistry; 10a-e  Acids and Bases; 5 a-g  Nuclear Processes; 11a-f  Solutions; 6 a-d, f

Along these lines, the major topics of study will include:

1 st Semester  Scientific Measurement 2 nd Semester  Matter-Properties and Change  Solutions  The Structure of the Atom  Acids and Bases  Naming Compounds  Periodic Trends  The Mole  Covalent Bonding  Chemical Reactions  Chemical Equilibrium  Stoichiometry  Reaction Rates  States of Matter  Energy and Chemical Change  Gases  Organic Chemistry A variety of laboratory investigations will give you a hands-on, inquiry-based approach to chemistry. As you participate in this class you will become involved in the processes of science and problem solving and acquire knowledge of basic chemistry concepts.

Class Expectations: In order to create a mutually respectful relationship and establish a safe and effective learning environment, it is necessary for you to follow classroom procedures and maintain a sense of maturity.  Attend and arrive on time each day  Come prepared-bring all necessary materials and supplies  Be respectful of others  You are encouraged to come to after school tutoring…better sooner than later!

Required Materials for Chemistry: 1. A simple scientific, non-graphing calculator. Bring it EVERYDAY! 2. A pack of Dry Erase Markers, Low Odor, please 3. A binder, or a section in your binder, to keep all your chemistry papers and hand-outs 4. Pen and or pencil Homework Policy Homework is assigned everyday except most Fridays. I expect every homework assignment to be completed. Please box your final answer.

Absence and Tardy Policy If your absence is excused, then you have the same number of days as you were absent to make up work. Excessive tardies and/or absences have a negative impact on your academic performance and hence, your grade in the class.

Tests And Quizzes If you are absent on the day of a test or quiz, you may take the make-up test or quiz when you return. Please be aware that make-up tests and quizzes may be essay format.

Labs Safety guidelines are to be followed at all times.  Labs will be conducted on Tuesdays, make-up labs are held that Thursday at lunch and the lab quiz will be on Friday.  Students are expected to read the experimental procedures before coming to class on the day of the lab.  For each lab, you are to highlight the materials on the lab hand-out and summarize, (in your OWN words), the lab procedures on a separate sheet of paper.  A short pre-lab quiz may be given to ensure that you have done so.  Two formal lab write ups will be required with the following elements in the order specified below: o Title, Purpose, Procedures, Data, Questions, Conclusions

Grading Policy

Category Weighting Grading Scale Exams 45% A 92.0-100 C 72.0-77.9 Quizzes 20% A- 90.0-91.9 C- 70.0-71.9 Labs: 2 parts 25% B+ 88.0-89.9 D+ 68.0-69.9  Completion B 82.0-87.9 D 62.0-67.9  Quiz B- 80.0-81.9 D- 60.0-61.9 Project 10% C+ 78.0-79.9 F Below 60

Academic Honesty Policy It is your responsibility to look and act innocent. I expect all students to participate in academic honesty and to do their own work. Copying from another person or turning in another person’s work as your own are both acts of cheating. Communicating of any sort during a test or quiz is considered cheating, as well as, any discussion of test questions with others. If you participate in academic dishonesty, you will receive no credit for that assignment and disciplinary action will be taken.

Please read and sign the syllabus. Please have your parent or guardian read and sign the syllabus, too. Keep this handout in your chemistry binder so that you may refer back to it during the course of the year.

By signing below, I acknowledge that I have read the contents of this syllabus.

______Student Signature Date

______Parent/Guardian Signature Date
