Maintain focus (SBGR and PS) 2. Create meaningful structure which enhances what is already occurring in the classroom. 3. Use the time in a way which is teacher centered. 4. To draw on the experience and expertise in our building.

Structure:  Staff will meet together in the library and sit in department and /or grade level groups.  Groups will then articulate a standard (most likely a power standard) upon which they will focus for the next month.  Groups will discuss what it will look like when students have mastered that standard and how they might help students who struggle and push students further who are able to meet the standard quickly.  Staff will determine what evidence will demonstrate level of mastery for each standard.  Groups will then review the previous month’s standard using student work and/or assessments to discuss successes and challenges.  Discussions will include what percentage of the class each teacher was able to get to standard and what the evidence for this was.  Facilitators will use protocols for sharing ideas and when appropriate sharing with the larger group. Bus Duty - We will be loading buses from the cafeteria this year. On weeks you have bus duty please be in the cafeteria as close to 3:15 as possible. Usually we can get you out of there as soon as things have calmed down and a couple buses have loaded. Basalt Duty – 3:15 to 3:30 This is an important point of supervision to keep our kids safe. On the week you are assigned to the Basalt please pick up a walky-talky in the office (unless you would rather rely on your mobile phone). When supervising this area please move back and forth along the south side of the building to so the students are aware that the area is being supervised. For safety and security reasons, coats, book bags, string bags and backpacks are to be left in the locker during regular school hours.

Students who do not follow these guidelines will be asked to change their clothing, cover up, or go home if necessary. Repeated infractions of these expectations create a repeated disruption to the learning environment and consequences will be assigned.

Administration at Salk Middle School may alter any progressive steps identified as necessary to continue the safety and positive learning environment of the school Discipline Referral

The purpose of using the recommended discipline referral is to hold students accountable and encourage them to change their behavior. The referral is a tool that ensures appropriate due process, including disciplinary measures, in a manner that builds a relationship between students and staff.  The discipline referral procedures are written directly on the referral form.  Your attitude is everything when presenting the referral to the students. Don’t escalate the situation by having a showdown or by showing anger.  Build a relationship by respectfully holding students accountable for their behavior and invite them to take advantage of what you have to teach them.  Due process - Let the students clearly see where they are headed so there are no surprises.  Signing their name on the referral lets the students take ownership for their behavior. Refusing to sign the referral is a student’s choice. Just write, “refuses to sign.” If the referral ends up on an administrator’s desk, a discussion will take place about refusing a signature. Don’t send the student to the office or get into a power struggle because he/she won’t sign the referral.  One-to-one private conversations are a respectful way of confronting students. The conversation will also go smoother when the students don’t have to save face in front of other students.  Fill out the form correctly so the counselor and administrator can clearly see the students’ misbehavior and appropriate consequences can be administered. When you skip steps on the referral, due process is compromised which will be reflected in lighter consequences and more importantly, you will not provide the students with the appropriate conversations to teach them how to change their behavior.

Immediate Removal from Class

Contact an administrator to escort the student from the room or send the student to the office to see an administrator immediately when the student’s behavior is so severe and extreme that it becomes potentially dangerous to one’s physical and emotional health or provides an atmosphere that directly challenges the teacher’s authority. Some examples of misbehavior that call for immediate removal:  Health and Safety – fighting, disregard for safety of self and others  Property Loss/Damage – vandalism  Substantial Disruption – extreme and severe defiance, harassment, profanity directed to a staff member  Exceptional Misconduct – assault, lewd conduct Special note – While incidents involving theft, weapons, and drugs are severe and extreme, they require an investigation that ensures due process for the student. If you suspect that a student is involved with theft, weapons, or drugs, notify an administrator or the school security officer immediately but do NOT tell the student what you are doing. The administrator and officer will decide how to proceed, give you specific directions, and will most likely come directly to you to escort the student to the office. (FYI – Mass searches are illegal! The administrator and officer cannot come to your classroom and do a mass search for the loss of items like musical equipment or cell phones. A mass search can be legal if safety is a significant issue.) Immediate Removal Procedure 1. Call the grade level administrator or office to reach an administrator. The teacher, student, and administrator will conference in the hall. The administrator will escort the student to the office. 2. If the administrator is unavailable, tell the student to report immediately to the student office. If the student refuses to leave, call the office or administrator. Call the student office and let a secretary know the student is on the way to the office. Send an email to the appropriate administrator noting the specific details of the misbehavior. This email will be copied and sent to the student’s parent/guardian and another copy will be put in the student’s file. Please make sure your email is professional so the student and parent may read it. 3. The administrator will contact the teacher regarding consequences and a plan of action for the student.

Salk Middle School Refocus Form

What was your behavior?

Why was this behavior a problem?

What did you want/need?

What will you do next time? What other things could you have done? Name at least four behaviors that would have been more appropriate.

Are you ready to return to the routine of the class? What behaviors are you willing to use when you return?
