Steele Families Make Full Use of the DPS Choice System for Middle School

The number one conversation starter for Steele parents today is "Where are you thinking of sending your kids to middle school?"

So, we asked, "Where have all those 5th graders gone?"

What we learned is that they went everywhere!

Here's where the 62 total 5th grade students who were at Steele last year went: 12 Hill (Honors Program/Neighborhood) 12 Morey (Honors Program/HGT Program/Neighborhood) 8 Denver Center for International Studies - DCIS (Magnet) 6 Denver School of the Arts - DSA (Magnet) 4 Merrill (Neighborhood) 4 Girls Athletic Leadership School - GALS (Charter) 4 Denver School of Science and Technology - DSST (Charter) 3 Hamilton (Neighborhood) 3 McAuliffe (Innovation/Neighborhood) 1 Grant Beacon (Innovation/Neighborhood) 1 Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning - RMSEL (Magnet) 1 Denver Green School (Innovation/Neighborhood) 3 Other (Private/Out of State)

Be sure to check out the new and exciting things that are happening at Steele's own neighborhood Merrill Middle School (http://merrill.dpsk12.org/). This past year, Merrill has added a 6th grade honors program and has increased school performance to "green" on the district's School Performance Framework.

For this year's 5th graders: The DPS SchoolChoice system will open for 6th grade enrollment on December 1st and close on January 31st. All 5th graders are required to prioritize their top 5 choices for middle school. For more information on the DPS school choice process, see the SchoolChoice website: http://soco.dpsk12.org/ orhttp://schoolchoice.dpsk12.org/how-to-choose-a-school/

It is recommended that you research schools by looking at each prospective school's individual website. Plan ahead and note that some special programs require applications, references from current teachers, and auditions beyond the registration process. Once you have narrowed down your list of potential schools, you may want to contact the schools to set up a tour or shadowing appointment for your child. Please remember, when making those appointments, that shadowing at another school takes time away from learning at Steele.

Also, consider attending the Middle and High School Expo on Tuesday, October 23, 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Infinity Park Event Center, 4400 E. Kentucky Ave., Glendale, CO 80246.

NEW CSC Website Visit the New CSC Website for all CSC information, to include: Member Contact information Meeting Schedules, Agendas, and Minutes Helpful Resources to include a CSC Developed: DPS and Education Acronym-Term Definition Table

If you have any questions or need any additional information, please contact the CSC Co-Chairs: Chris Paoletti: [email protected] Jeanette Cornier: [email protected]
