<p> MELISSA OWENS, M.S.</p><p>Instructor Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Homeland Security Programs Hiwassee College Madisonville, Tennessee [email protected]</p><p>Ms. Melissa Owens is the Instructor of the Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Homeland Security Programs for Hiwassee College. Hiwassee College has recently expanded the Criminal Justice Program to include an online degree program with a Homeland Security emphasis. Ms. Owens has researched and developed the Homeland Security online degree program to include the courses of Introduction to Terrorism; Introduction to Homeland Security; Community Crisis Management; Emergency Management; and Disaster Sociology. She works with various committees on campus, including the Safety and Security Committee with which she is currently coordinating the campus Safety and Emergency Management Plan to include a Disaster Action Plan that will contain an Emergency Response Communications System.</p><p>Ms. Owens has a background and training in emergency management response which began with a position of executive director for the Monroe County Chapter of the American Red Cross. She also has training and experience in emergency management planning and hazardous materials management and training, occupational safety and health, and emergency response.</p><p>Ms. Owens is currently a board member for the Monroe County Chapter of the American Red Cross for Disaster Management. She is also director and Disaster Management vice chair of Fundraising. As the disaster director, Ms. Owens is recruiting and organizing a countywide Disaster Action Team as well as coordinating the Red Cross Chapter’s Disaster Action Response Manual and Plan.</p><p>Ms. Owens earned an M.S. in safety and emergency management from the University of Tennessee, and she has completed 21 graduate hours in sociology/criminology. She holds a B.A. in sociology from the University of Tennessee.</p><p>Ms. Owens is attending the Emergency Management Higher Education Conference to network and learn in order to maximize the benefits of Hiwassee College’s Homeland Security Program for those students enrolled in the program.</p><p>May 15, 2008</p>
