Email - [email protected] Language Arts – 6 Webpage - http://pages.cms.k12.nc.us/lindalombardo Davidson IB Middle School

Materials required: Interactive Notebook (composition/marble notebook), Language of Literature text (LOL) DIB agenda, pencils, binder, loose leaf paper, pencil pouch, Scotch tape, colored pencils/markers, personal reading novel needed every day, Wish list (optional) tissues, anti-bacterial wipes, hand soap, pencils

Students should bring their binder, Interactive Notebook, and a novel every day. Students should read when they finish their work before other students. Books may be checked out from the library and my shelves but NOT during class time. Students may keep their LOL textbooks in the classroom but it is at their own risk. I change classrooms and students may wish to keep their textbook in their own locker. They must remember to bring their books to class.

Vocabulary work Stems are given every third week or so. Students should make flashcards and study 5-10 minutes per day. Stem quizzes will be given the first day we meet, usually Monday or Tuesday. Quizzes are cumulative. Lists can be found on the class webpage. Greek and Latin stems are word parts (prefixes, roots, suffixes)

Grammar work GUM pages are our main source for grammar assignments. We will begin with parts of speech and then continue on to parts of a sentence, phrases, and clauses. We will begin 4-level analysis by the second quarter. If students need reinforcement of a skill, work will be assigned from the Language Network (LN) book. GUM pages will be emailed home and can be printed at home or completed on loose leaf paper.

Reading skills Students will use graphic organizers, and other reading strategies with their reading assignments. We will cover non-fiction text organizers, chronological order, primary/secondary resources, fact/opinion, etc. We begin the year with Socratic Seminars involving our summer reading books. Later in the year we will conduct Literature Circles with groups of students reading novels together. We will study: fiction, non- fiction, poetry, drama, mythology, etc.

Writing skills Students will complete many types of writing. Writing skills are covered in both the LOL book and the LN book. This year I will employ a “Writing to Music” program. Students will focus on narrative, evaluative, and problem-solution writing. Students will maintain a portfolio of work in the classroom. Each stage of the writing process should be evident. Each draft should be saved, labeled, and dated. Plagiarism will result in a zero for that grade. Cursive writing will be required beginning 2nd quarter.

Research/Technology Students will prepare one research paper during the third quarter. Students will research a topic, prepare three oral presentations, and compile information in a paper using MLA format. They will learn to create a webpage and a powerpoint presentation. They will manage an email account and use it to send work from school to home and back.

Speaking/Presentation skills Students are often asked to present their work orally. Students will create three oral/visual presentations for their research paper. Students will present memorized texts and extemporaneous speeches.

Listening skills Students will be expected to listen carefully and politely to the teacher, visitors, and their peers. Grades may be recorded during presentations, literature circles, and Socratic Seminars according to listening behaviors observed and the ability to answer questions related to the presentation of another student. Grading is determined as follows:

Quizzes 40% Notebook 30% Participation 20% Homework 10%

CMS grading A= 93-100 B= 85-92 C= 77-84 D= 70-76 F= Below 70

HOMEWORK Students who don’t have their homework in class at the start of class will be given a homework ticket. They will record the reason for the missing homework. I will do my best to email you the day this occurs. Homework may be submitted to me at the beginning of the next class period and 70% of the grade may be earned. Assignments submitted after that time will receive feedback when appropriate and a zero grade. Most homework is graded on a “check plus” (A equivalent), “check” (B equivalent), “check minus” (C equivalent), or “Redo” basis. If I write “Redo” on the top, the revised homework should be turned in by the next class after it is handed back for a maximum of 70 points. If revised work is not turned in, the grade turns to a zero.

MAKE UP WORK Students who are absent on the day an assignment is due must turn that work in during the next class. Students who are absent on the day work is assigned have five days to submit that work. When students miss a quiz, they must arrange a make-up quiz within five days.

CLASSROOM Students should be in their seats before the bell or a tardy will be recorded. Students should raise their hands to speak and should have pencils sharpened before class. Students may not borrow materials from other students and must never take supplies from the teacher’s desk. Please come prepared with your own materials.

Sign below and turn in to Mrs. Lombardo.
