Why Structures Fail. Effect of material properties on fracture. Atomic view of fracture. Stress concentration, Effect of flaws, Stress analysis of cracks, Instability, R curves and Crack tip plasticity. Fracture mechanisms in metals Fracture mechanisms in nonmetals. Fracture toughness testing of metals. Fracture toughness testing of nonmetals. Fatigue crack propagation. Growth of short crack, Experimental measurements of fatigue crack growth</p><p>Prerequisites ME 2581, ME2591 Course objectives  Analyze why structures are failed and recognize the effect of material properties on fracture  Recognize the atomic view of fracture.  Understand the effect of stress concentration, flaws and recogize the stress analysis of cracks, the instability, the R curves, and the crack tip plasticity in fracture.  Understand and explain the different fracture mechanisms in metals and non metals  Apply and practice the fracture toughness testing of metals and non metals  Analyze the fatigue crack propagation, growth of short crack  Apply and practice experimental measurements of fatigue crack growth</p><p>Topics covered Topic # of # of Contact Hours weeks Introduction to different mechanisms of Materials 1 3 failure; Why Structures Fail? If you miss more than 25% of the lectures and tutorials you will not be allowed to attend the final exam and you will fail the course. Textbook T.L.
