By 36 1976, Columbia Montessori Children’s House settled permanently 37 in the Melrose Heights neighborhood at the corner of Woodrow 38 and Kershaw streets; and 39 40 Whereas, in the past forty years, Cheryl Spencer has taught 41 hundreds of Columbia’s children in an environment where children 42 have enjoyed a sense of community and peace; and

[5147] 2 1 2 Whereas, with music surrounding them, children ages two and a 3 half to six work side by side on different educational activities 4 without confusion, learning at their own pace and gently guided by 5 their teachers while the older children help the younger ones; and 6 7 Whereas, Mrs. Spencer’s love of the environment and travel have 8 worked their way into the curriculum: children learn about nature 9 through handson planting in the school’s garden and develop a 10 global perspective by studying geography and other cultures; and 11 12 Whereas, in May 2014, Columbia Montessori Children’s House 13 will close, but Cheryl Spencer will continue to train the next 14 generation of Montessori teachers through programs at Lander and 15 Clemson universities and with a program in North Carolina; and 16 17 Whereas, together with her husband of fortyeight years, she raised 18 two fine sons, Chris and Scott, and she is a member and elder at 19 Shandon Presbyterian Church in Columbia; and 20 21 Whereas, she is a member of the Philanthropic Education 22 Organization (PEO), which is dedicated to assisting young women 23 in their educational pursuits; and 24 25 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 26 Representatives are grateful for the years of outstanding dedication 27 that Cheryl Spencer has devoted to the education of our youngest 28 citizens and wish her many years of enjoyment in her wellearned 29 retirement. Now, therefore, 30 31 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 32 33 That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of 34 South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Cheryl 35 Spencer, founder of Columbia Montessori Children’s House, upon 36 the occasion of her retirement after forty years of exemplary 37 service, and wish her continued success and happiness in all her 38 future endeavors. 39 40 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 41 Cheryl Spencer. 42 XX 43

[5147] 3
