The student will be able to:

1 safely operate plasma arc Cutter to create inventory for MIG welding 2 measure and mark 4’ by 4” plates to be cut and used in MIG welding coupons 3 safely MIG-weld one pad layer in each of the positions - flat, horizontal, and vertical.

Tools and Equipment

 Plasma arc torch  Information Sheet  MIG welder  diamond plate  soapstone  clamps  appropriate PPE: welding gloves, safety goggles / glasses (shade 10) for plasma arc torch, hooded welding helmet (shade 10)  10” pedestal grinder  6” slip joint pliers

Key Terms / Vocabulary

 MIG welder  plasma arc torch  coupon  padding  slag inclusions  MIG protective spray

Interest Approach/Anticipatory Set

Students are encouraged to be proficient in the latest technology at our campus disposal which means MIG welders and plasma arc torches. The advantages of using these units over the traditional (and most common) AC/DC welder and oxy-fuel torch is explained and demonstrated by instructor.

Teaching Plan and Strategy / Presentation of New Material 1 Students are informed of lab process and diamond plate coupon materials are allotted.

2 Students are informed of their assignment process and are encouraged to work at their own speed, make multiple passes, and label and identify their coupons 3 Students will begin cutting their practice coupon before beginning their three-position assignment - flat, horizontal, and vertical.

Activity/Application/ Student Engagement /Laboratory

Students will begin lab applications after being informed of class and individual expectations which entail staying at their assigned duty station and cooperative habits of a large group of students engaged in lab processes. Students will have their plates/coupons marked and labeled and after INSTRUCTOR has checked for marking and measuring accuracy, they may begin plasma arc cutting.

Evaluation / Summary

Students will be evaluated on measurement accuracy, cutting accuracy, and bead quality and consistency as well as staying at their assigned duty station and cooperative work habits.

References/Additional Materials / Extended Learning Opportunities/ Enrichment

additional lab handout

Miller Welding Company™ overhead transparencies and PowerPoint presentations, IMS Online© materials

College & Career Readiness Standard

Science: VII Chemistry, I C 2 a, b, c

©Texas Education Agency, 2011
