Use back if needed. After reading, commenting, and grading student work I came to the realization that I needed to go back and re-teach the Haitian Revolution, giving students the time needed to really grasp the big ideas of the Haitian Revolution and how they compare with those of the French Revolution. In addition, I feel that students need more work on how to integrate evidence into an essay. They often know that evidence is valid but struggle with explaining how it is valid. In addition students need work on analysis. They need to be doing more of it on a daily basis, and in a formal way, so that has become a daily change in instruction.

I have also taken a class to simply spend more time having students use evidence and compare how they analyze it, and then have taught them more techniques for how to best analyze their work.

After discussing this assignment with my colleagues I’ve realized that I could do more to better prepare my students for writing such a complex essay. I needed to spend a significant number of days scaffolding instruction and helping teach the students how to gather data for use in an essay. If I build these steps in earlier in the year, it will take me less time when giving this assignment to prepare and the students will be able to produce better writing with less instructor involvement.
