<p> Fold it, Tear it, Cut it…..Freestanding Paper Sculptures</p><p>Description: A 3-D unit exploring the constructive capabilities and the challenges associated with paper sculpture. </p><p>Art History: History of origami as well as overview of contemporary Paper Sculpture Aesthetics: Article and discussion regarding the interconnected nature of art, math and science as well as the value we place on avocation vs. profession in arts/life. Studio: Creation of freestanding paper sculpture Criticism: Components that work to create successful sculptures as well as analytical development in assessing artworks.</p><p>Problem to Solve: how can you create a freestanding paper sculpture that is at least 2 ½ feet tall using only paper and tape?</p><p>Resources: Washington Post article entitled “Scientific Papers” by Rachel Saslow, Prezi on paper sculptures, and computer access for internet and planning</p><p>Materials/Equipment needed: any paper (newspaper, printing paper, wallpaper, construction paper, etc), clear scotch tape, and any tools required/creatively implemented.</p><p>Vocabulary: *origami: *freestanding: *model</p><p>Requirements: *Planning process of 3 initial design thumbnail sketches *Planning process of 3 view thumbnail sketches with details & supplemental technique info *Model/technique exploration *Sculpture using paper and clear scotch tape only *Sculpture is freestanding *Sculpture is minimum of 2 ½ feet in vertical length Process: Day One: Review article from WP. Students engage in class discussion, facilitated by instructor, regarding the following subjects: *choice of creating art for the love of art vs. profession that guarantees financial security *the connections between science/math/art *the problem solving techniques that are inherent to art and applicable to science/math Students will view prezi in order to see creative potential of paper sculptures as well as possible techniques. Thumbnail sketches will begin the planning process. Students will work at least 3 design ideas. Once the final design is chosen, 3 view thumbnails shall be completed for homework. Day Two: Students will conference with a partner student on final design t-nails, then conference with teacher. Research phase commences as well as technique model. Day Three-Five: Studio day to work.
