Used Oil and Filter Disposal

Used Oil and Filter Disposal

Used Oil and Filter Disposal

Used Oil: Create a segregated storage area or container. Label the container "Waste Oil Only". Maintain a written log to document all amounts and types of oil added to the container. No solvents, oil contaminated with solvents, PCBs, non-petroleum based oils, or any other material should be added to the container. Limit access to the container so that only used oil is added to the container. Label the container with red waste tag and when the container is full, complete a Chemical pick up request form at www.ehs.psu.edu to have the oil collected . Used Oil Filters: Used oil filters, when removed from equipment, can contain as much as 12-16 ounces of oil; therefore, all oil filters must be punctured on the dome end and hot-drained for 24 hours. "Hot-drained" means that the filters are drained immediately after being taken off a hot engine. Crushing and dismantling the filters will remove even more of the oil. Filters that are drained and/or crushed, and are "non terne-plated" may be disposed in the regular garbage. Contact the oil filter manufacturer to ensure that the filters are "non terne-plated", and make a record of the conversation. It is strongly recommended that the used filters be recycled. Contact EHS if you would like more information on recycling oil filters.

Used Fuel Filters: Used fuel filters may exhibit the characteristic of ignitability or toxicity. All used fuel filters should be tagged for collection by EHS.
