<p>Dear Parents,</p><p>This letter is to inform you of places in our community that will be serving free meals to children during the summer months. Recent Census data reveals that three East Tennessee counties are among Tennessee’s most impoverished. Greene County is ranked number 16 for the highest poverty rate. </p><p>According to Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap Food Insecurity report of 2013, 14.4% of Northeast Tennesseans are considered food insecure, and 1 in 4 children (under the age of 18) are considered food insecure. </p><p>The Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee is striving to combat child hunger during the summer months when school is not in session, by serving an eight county region composed of Carter, Greene, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Sullivan, Washington, and Unicoi Counties. Summer Food for Kids provides children with food on a weekly basis at one of their numerous distribution sites during the summer.
