Gastronomy Tourism Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) in the context of the European Research Project PACMAn organized a seminar entitled «The Authentic Mediterranean Route Cluster - in support of the local agrofood production». Purpose of the workshop, attended by CUT’s network partners from Greece, Italy, and Portugal was to investigate the possibility to create a basic infrastructure for a Mediterranean culinary route where SMEs producing authentic MED products could be promoted. The workshop was organized as part of the pilot activities of the Pacman project designed to promote competitiveness, innovation, sustainability, and the internationalization of authentic Mediterranean food products. The exhibition "Taxidi 2013", which lasted from May 17 until May 19 was a great opportunity to place the pilot action in which the CUT participated with a stand together with partners from Greece, Italy and Portugal, where they promoted their traditional products which will included in the culinary route. The exhibition opening was performed by the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism George Lakkotrypis. The exhibition attended Ministers, Ambassadors, and representatives of relevant agencies, Directors of Airlines and many other guests. The research project PACMAn is under the supervision and guidance of Associate Professor Maria Kapardis. The rationale behind the proposal to create this culinary journey lays in the fact that the barriers to entry into foreign markets cannot be easily overcomed even with the formation of so-called «clusters» or similar other synergies. With this in mind CUT together with European partners chose an alternative route as to promote and assist in the internationalization of their traditional products, the gastronomy tourism. The working group proposes creating a culinary journey from Portugal to Cyprus (see map below) covering the entire Mediterranean region in an effort to promote growth and support the sustainability of the region. The culinary journey will aim to promote local brand based on the common theme of authentic products. This approach has clear benefits of internationalization for SMEs such as direct sales, eliminating distribution costs, eliminate weaknesses bargaining, reducing competition between multinationals

1 with similar products, and an emphasis on the local aspect of production and not the complexity of exports, which are high barriers to entry into foreign markets.

2
